Re: Up south slope 453 IH 2003
I have noticed that lots of combines in this area use turf
tires rather than regular r1 tractor tire. maybe a
elementary question, buy why do you use the turf tires?

Re: Up south slope 453 IH 2003
I'm not sure why these tires are used. In the early 50's
combines came out with bomber tires off of bomber planes. I
think they help give floatation in loose soils without
digging on hillsides which could cause problems and use alot
of power. Some areas have really soft soil on steep slopes.
There used to be alot of rill or ditch water erosion years
back which made for very bumpy rides. These tires would
float over the erosion ditches on the hills. We don't have
muddy conditions at harvest like a corn farmer might have.
I've seen these tires on plains combines too. With use of
duals now, regular tractor treads are used even on Hillco
levellers which do not run the tires vertically like older
style levellers.
