It is a hay loader for loose hay. The loader was hooked
behind a wagon that had a hay rack. Wheather the wagon was
pulled by horses or a tractor the wagon was towed down the
line if hay and the pickup fingers on the reel [driven by
large wheels] would pull hay up onto the bed slats. The long
push bars would keep the hay moving up the slats and over
the top to fall into the wagon. Once the wagon was filled
the loader was unhooked in the field so the wagon could be
taken to the barn or stack. The next wagon would hook up and
start a new load. I was raised as a kid using this in the
late 1930s, early '40s.
