2188 swallowed by sinkhole
The new 2188 dropped into a sinkhole in southern KY.

That whole region is peppered with underground caves and
caverns that collapse at random in fields. What is solid one
day will have collapsed the next! I have seen some 50+ ft
wide and so deep you can't see the bottom.

If some sinkholes are that big and a piece of machinery
falls in, how in the world do they get it out?

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
If you are lucky and the corn head (or other equipment you
are using) is wide enough to stop you falling very far into
the hole, then a tractor or two are usually all you need. A
couple of years back,I heard of a guy pulling a corn planter
and it STOPPED the tractor going deep into the hole by
bridging across! I will try and look out some photos of the
bigger sink-holes and post them here, to give you an idea of
their potential size. Phil

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
I was also curious of how many acres are like this with all
of the sinkholes. I have never heard of anything like it
before. Where I farm, up here in Canada, all we have to
worry about is the potholes being to wet!

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
Is there usually alot of damage done to this equipment that
falls into these sinkholes. I am like Russ, all i have to
worry about is the potholes being to wet. I live in Iowa,
and have never heard of anything like this before. I have
had wet spots eat a Terra Gator or a 4wd Tractor, but a
little pull will get them out and you can go on with the
day. I am curious about the damage these sinkholes do to
machinery.

Scary monsters!! imagine working at night, one minute your
following Bob in the Vers in front being blinded by his
lights shining in the dust, you turn to look at the machine
your dragging behind- turn back and ----- "Where the hell
did Bob go?!"
You'd spend your whole life hanging on -just in case!
This brings a whole new dimenion to the job- your not just
doing it for love, you're doing it for the adrenalin rush!
These are brave boys indeed, we salute you fom the other
side of the pond!

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
Guys, most of the sink holes are about 50 miles South West
of Mammoth Cave National Park, in KY. There are claimed to
be over 200 miles of explored and charted caves, plus
hundreds more not yet mapped. The soils in that region are
very productive, and have a limestone subsurface layer
hundreds of feet thick. As the underground streams erode the
limestone, these layers collapse and everything above
suddenly decends!

Some people try to dump trees, old cars, rock, soil, etc. in
the holes to stop them eroding, but usually its a lost
cause, they turn into big plug holes in the landscape to
keep equipment operators on their toes !

They can tear equipment up badly, especially the big
sink-holes !

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
Hi Phil!
I was just wondering where the house picture was taken. As
you are well aware, I have experienced the sink hole
phenomenon, but I have never seen the house before. I can
just the pockets jingling if it was anything to do with Mr.

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
Uups!
If I see that holes, swallowing machines and houses, I'm
happy to drive on very steep slopes, where you can calculate
the risk somehow ...

We had such a hole in Austria some years ago, it swallowed
some houses, unter it was a mine.

Thanks for information, Christian

Those picture are simply amazing to see. When thigs like
this happens, who pays for the damage? Does the old mining
company or the state pay for it? Thanks.

Re: 2188 swallowed by sinkhole
In the eastern part of the Netherlands, we had some
sinkholes in the area where they were minig for salt. They
inject water into the ground and pump it back up, and
extract the salt. A car crashed into one, but that's rare in
our country.
