RSS Information
This post is a quick introduction to RSS for anybody who is
not familiar with it. Basically RSS is a method that allows
software on your computer to check internet sites to see if
new information has been posted. You can find out more about
it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28protocol%29

To find free software to allow you to access the feed visit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_aggregator

Set your software to visit
http://www.farmphoto.com/rss/rss10.xml every half hour or so
and then you will be able to get a listing of all new posts
to farmphoto.

I've been using this feature for a month or so now and it
seems to work pretty well....

[UPDATE FEB 24, 2005]
There are now some RSS choices. If you only turn your
computer on once a day you might want to use the 2nd or 3rd
link below.

http://www.farmphoto.com/rss/rss10.xml - updates every 10min, shows last 10 posts.
http://www.farmphoto.com/rss/rss24hr.xml - updates every hour, shows last 24 hours of posts.
http://www.farmphoto.com/rss/rss36hr.xml - updates every hour, shows last 36 hours of posts.

Re: RSS Information
Hi,

The RSS idea is brilliant, but is it possible to set the
timespan to 1 day rather than 1/2 hour? I don't tend to
leave my PC on all the time, but do normally check posts
most days. If the RSS was updated daily I could use my RSS
aggregator to search for the posts that I want to look at
and not the ones I don't. This would save the site alot of
bandwidth - 1 small xml file instead of having to trawl
through lots of images that I am not so interested in.

Just my thoughts and as always may thanks for a really great
website.

Re: RSS Information
Thanks for the feedback DJ Moes.

If anybody has pointers for people regarding which RSS
reader they should use please post it here. Personally I use
"feedreader" http://www.feedreader.com/ . It's simple and
straight forward. I suspect there are better readers out
there however as it doesn't offer too many features. It is
free though :-) !

Re: RSS Information
Stu, right to the point, for other people with own sites, is
this useable for ther own sites? and how to install?

Re: RSS Information
Hi Mathieu,

if you meant "can another site publish the RSS feed from
farmphoto" then the answer is yes. How to go about that
would depend on the type of software the site already runs.
I have never done this so am a bit fuzzy here but I don't
think it would be at all difficult....

if you meant can you publish information from your own site
in RSS format then the answer is yes, you just need a script
of some sort to regularly access the information and format
it in RSS format.

Am I answering the question correctly?

Google is your friend on this one :-)

best,

Stu
