Holt wooden self propelled combine
This is a wooden Holt (later Caterpillar) from the very
early 1900's. This is similar to old pull type Holts of the
day except it has a caterpillar track behing the header out
the side which propelled through the field without a tractor
I think . The only othe possibility is that the track
powered the combine from the ground. The ground drives could
be horse killers with impatient drivers. These combines had
a front tiller wheel for steering. Many horse or mule drawn
pull type combines of large size also had a front wheel to
hold the combine up. Hooked on a large crawler the third
wheel was not needed and wasn' t used with large tractors.
This may have been used behind a crawler also. Taken in Bird
City fairgrounds in Kansas I think in early 90's
