Toasted cotton picker
Saw this picker while driving.

Fire is one of the things that all picker drivers must be
constantly watching for. If you can't dump the load quick
enough this is the result.

Re: Toasted cotton picker
The fact theat the rubber is totally burnt from the rims
gives an idea of how hot this must have been...

Why is it that if you don't dump the load quick enough fire
is the result??

Re: Toasted cotton picker
Sorry, I should have said "...if you don't dump the load
quick enough <i>after it catches fire</i>".

(This is assuming that you notice that it is on fire - and
that the fire is in the basket and not elsewhere on the
machine...)

Re: Toasted cotton picker
Why is the fire only on the picker? Why did it not spread
through the field? Are cotton plants not that flamable? In
a field of wheat, a combine fire would set the field on fire
for example. If the fire was that hot, I would think the
field around the picker would be toast!! As you can tell, I
do not know much about cotton!!! Thanks:-)!!

Re: Toasted cotton picker
I have never heard of a fire rampaging through a cotton
field. One of the things that probably restricts this is the
wide row spacing (36-40"), and the clumped and separated
nature of the cotton bolls themselves. That's not to say
that it couldn't happen if the conditions were right.
Perhaps others might have more experience with this...

Believe me, once that fire catchs a hold, you haven't got
long to ditch that basket of cotton.Have heard of blokes
kicking front windscreen out,to get out of cab!
