Scharnhorst barn
This is the last remaining building that belonged the our
neighbors, the Scharnhorst family. Once there were 2 horse
barns like this. Probably this one being a little larger was
used for horses; the other for cattle. A hog shed was below
this. And a large house and bunkhouse attatched above the
cellar along with a few other small sheds and a granary.
During the early 20th century, the farming economy was good
and farmers at the time built many buildings and houses
during those good times . I don't think the Scharnhorsts had
this place at the time. They were one of the first families
in the area .

Re: Scharnhorst barn
The Scharnhorst's were Germans that settled near Genesee,
Idaho. There are many Germans that settled here in the
1870's. There was a little Irish neighborhood here. The area
north is mostly Norwegian since they liked areas where there
were trees I was told. Western Washington near Seattle does
have a good sized Dutch population who are famous for their
dairies. Germans are a large population in the wheat and
corn growing areas of the USA. Eastern Washington has some
towns that have very large German Russian groups who were
Germans that came out of the Ukraine in the early 20th
century.
