What exactly was the cat ag4 and ag6 for, im presuming
agricultre from the ag part of the name but y was it built
when there was the cat chanllengers about?

I think it came out shortly before the Challenger. In the
Pacific Northwest and California/Arizona areas cats have
been traditionally used for tillage since the early 20th
century. If they were built at the same time as the
Challenger, it may have been for some operators who still
wanted steel tracked cats. In some dry areas farms are very
large and movement from place to place was not as important.
When they came out some wondered if the steering on the
Challenge would hold up. I've never heard of complaints on
that. If you go to Cat's site and look for dealers in
Washington state and check their used list you might see
one. The only pics I've seen of them had more black on the
frame. Check out Walla Walla , WA or Pendleton, OR for
dealer used inventories (Western States Equipment?).
