Re: Allis Chalmer AC 440

Who built that tractor? Kinda looks like a Steiger.

Thanks & Take care,

Re: Allis Chalmer AC 440
It is a Steiger. AC came in 1972 with his first four wheel
drive tractor. Just when it looked as if AC could not
acquire a four-wheel drive tractor, the climate improved at
Steiger. The ownership had changed and they had to moved to
Fargo in North Dakota. and they wanted out side business.
Steiger agreed to their Bearcat to AC at a price that both
companies could make little money. For the engine the tested
Caterpillar and Cummins V8 engines and selected the Cummins.
That was 555cub inch V8 with 165hp drawbar and 208 at the
flywheel it was rated at 2800rpm. By Steiger it was the
Bearcat serie and by AC it was named the 440.

The 440 that you see here on the picture is one from the 2nd
series with a black grill and new decals. They came out
after serial NO. 1460. in 1974. Over the 1000 model 440's
were sold between 1972 and 1976 when it was followed up by
the 7580.

More company's did it on the same way like AC with his first
four wheel drive tractors. Ford with the FW series. IH with
his 4386 an 4586.
