Re: Time to plant onions

Seems early in year to plant onions to me,but then I only
know Onions from our garden nothing on large scale. When
will you harvest them and what is normal yield? What is
your soil temperature now? We have snow on the ground up
here in southern Missouri

Re: Time to plant onions
Roy, we are way south of you so our season starts sooner. We
can go to the field with pepper and tomatoes in mid
March, with only a small chance for late frost. But it does
happen and is costly. Ground temp is about 45deg. Air temp
today 60deg. Bill
Re: Time to plant onions
hello Bill
With what kind of machine do you plant the onions(brand) ?
And why are the rows so wide ?
Re: Time to plant onions
BD, the planter we use is in the photo post. (His name is
Artimeo) We plant by hand but have tried the Holland
transplanter. The transplanter is real slow, so hand
planting is better for us. We only plant a few acres of
onions. We do grow other crops also pepper, cucumbers,
squash, tomatoes, southern peas and some melons. The row width
is 48" we use one row equipment. We are not a large grower.
Our market in for local sales. Here it is called truck
farming or market farming. Bill
Re: Time to plant onions
What is squash, I don't know it
Re: Time to plant onions
I don't know where you are located but squash is eaten the
world over. It is very common. Sales here are good. 25# box
brings about $18.00 US. There are also many different kinds
of squash. Bill Bradshaw
