How can this category be better?
All:

The farmtoys section of FP is very popular but it doesn't get enough attention from me :-( I want to change that.

How can it be fixed so that good photos are easier to find?

What should a new categorization be based on?

Manufacturer brand (Ertl, Siku, Norscott, Britains etc)?
Or model brand (Fendt, JD, Case etc)?
Or Scale (1/32, 1/64 etc)?

What do you think?

Should the farmtoys section be spun off into a completely new web site (like a smaller version of FP)?

If you have any ideas please post them here...

Re: How can this category be better?
Categorization on brand is not allways possible, by hand build models there's no brand. I think you can keep it this way it is now.

Re: How can this category be better?
I also think the way it is now is fine, it's easy to see all the new models the guys make in 1 section, instead of looking in 3-4 sections to find all the news.

Don't worry about the toys, it's alright.

Re: How can this category be better?
You could change the old farmphoto site to "model-farmphoto" (If its still running?) But then, the guys also post "real" tractor photos as well as models. So they would need to visit both sites, unless you could make a separate homepage that opens along with the current one? like a page to scroll down into that has its own reply, active most posts ect..

Re: How can this category be better?
But Michiel, there are over 40,000 posts in this forum? Don't you think this needs to be split up somehow?

Re: How can this category be better?
I don't like that idea Internash, with 2 separate forums. I probably won't take a look very often on the other forum than i guess.

Re: How can this category be better?
internash: I suppose I could make it so that it was both a separate site and *also* a subsite of FP. Not sure exactly how easy that would be to do. The problem with adding lots of new categories at the current FP is that it makes the page even bigger and slower to load :-\ But there is normally a reasonable technical solution to be found if the need is great enough.

PS. internash: your cricketers look like they might make a game of this test.... :-P

Re: How can this category be better?
Hi Stu, i am also a collector of Farmtoys. i think you can categorize the 1/32 section because at this moment there are over 42200 hits. Too many for one category !! Try for a test to put them in the manufacturer/builders categories in the 1/32 category and then just have a category "Unknown" for those who do not have that specified in the name or description. You know the manufacturers i think, but we can help you if you want. The dealer "Tyro Toys" from Germany has the most of them on his site.
You can also make categories for different makes(Case IH, JD, NH, etc) and then devide them into the scales(1/16,1/32, etc), but then there will be much more categories.
i like the first method i mention.

Re: How can this category be better?
Hi again Stu.
I have just posted a mail to you about the signature an the pictures in them. Anyway this is about the toys section. I don’t think that the toys should be s separate site, but some more specific topics is a great idea.
If you are looking where the main post are it is in size 1/32 so I think the first place to change is here. My idea is:
1/32 rebuild/customized/handbuilt
1/32 control or radio controlled
1/32 Dioramas
1/32 collections/standard models.

Off course you can change the other scales but the numbers of post didn’t make it necessary.

Anyway my basic point would be, keep FarmPhoto as one site with both real machines and scale models.

Keep on the good work.

Best regards from Denmark..Shrek

Ps. The posting process has been much better with the new site. Thanks Stu…

Re: How can this category be better?
I would say or scale or brand. I think mayby a mix of those two...
Main is 1:32(is most populair) and than the brands.
And than the rest of the scales.

Re: How can this category be better?
Then I look like bugs bunny:-P Anyways, if you look at the pics you will see 40% of them are implements? so.. If you add a "implements" category under 1:32 that will remove a few thousand pics. then add a few other extra categories. harvesters, tractors ect.... that should take the numbers down;-)

Re: How can this category be better?
i think it's allright like it is. And if you really want to change it, then I prefer the separation in scales, but that won't change a lot.

Re: How can this category be better?
yikes. Some great ideas but definitely no consensus as yet. I'll give it a few days for those people who don't visit all the time...

Re: How can this category be better?
Stu, i would leave the 1/32 section as it is.

Instead of adding categories to 1/32, i would add categories to the Tractor part of Machinery and Equipment, just like you did with John Deere.

Add TS, TM, TG, T7000, T8000, TJ etc for new holland.
Add MX, CS, STX etc for case
Add 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 etc for fendt.

I would rather have that then a change in the 1/32 section.

Just an idea.

Thanks,
Rony

Re: How can this category be better?
I think the main category should be by manufacturer brand (ERTL, Universal Hobbies, Spec Cast, SIKU, etc.) with a category for hand build models. And a subcategory for scale (1/16, 1/32, 1/64, etc.)
That's my humble opinion, what do you think guys?
Greetings from Costa Rica.

Re: How can this category be better?
hi stu,
i think you should put the list of scale's, then put a drop down menu off the scale
e.g.
> 1/32 scale
uh
siku
britains
etc

Re: How can this category be better?
i agree with rony!
that a very good idea,
for the toys, i think that you put all the scales and than the brands. en than you must add some topics like: selfbuild, machinery ect.

Re: How can this category be better?
Stu, it wouldnt hurt if you moved the toys to a different website. I am not interested in the toys at all, and because of all the toy posts on the main page, the new posts of a day, that i want to see, are pushed off because of the many toy posts.

I am not interested in the toy posts because there is not much to see: no landscape, no local weather or ground conditions and you cant see how these machines perform in practice :-P
