Seeding Rye in Ukraine
A series about seeding rye. The machines are mostly old soviet style. Very easy and simple. Nothing to fancy, but almost everybody can repair them with a hammer. Plus lots of spare parts around. Also very cheap. The last couple of years more and more foreign (american and european) machines were bought. Both from alien investors and Unkrainians.

This is a T 150 preparing the seedbed with a set of discs.

Sorry pictures are not that good. Very cloudy day. :-(

Belarus with the drill. In the backround you can see one of the two T 150's. The main farm of the local kolchos (sp) is barely visable. The field was combined and then disced. After a couple of weeks the weeds were already flowering. Now it is disced again, drilled and then rolled.

The Belarus is about 80 engine hp. The drill is about 20' / 6m.

Re: Seeding Rye in Ukraine
The seed box is ridiculously small considering the field size. A normal field is about 100 ha. Bigger ones are easily 400 ha. (250 ac / 1000ac). Sometimes there was a seed truck on either side of the field.

The seed truck. A nice compact unit.

Re: Seeding Rye in Ukraine
From behind. Usually there is at least two of them. One on the farm getting loaded directly from the machine treating the grain. The other on the field. I thought it was a really nice setup. There is a lot of people involved but they do a fair bit of work in a day.

Any comments and questions welcome.

This is just another interesting way of farming. I like the old Soviet farming a lot, something else then all this new fancy machinery.

Nice pics :-)

I bet that drill was making the 80 HP Belarus tractor work hard :-P

Thanks for your replies.

@internash: There were lots of them. Mainly plowing and disking. To bad I never found time to take any pictures. Kind of hard to tell your boss you're late because you had to wait for a K-700 to come across the field. Which is more than 1km (1100 yd) long. :-\ Some fields are just too big..... :-D

@ TasCowboy. The Belarus did not make the impression of working too hard. In fact it was going rather fast. My guess would be +10 kmh ( +6 mph) The drill is very light. The ground is very soft so I guess it works.

@krasus: I spent the summer over there. I was working for a german owned grain farm. Really enjoyed it too. Went trough Poland with a car to get there. Now Poland is really coming along. Everywhere there is construction and building going on. New highway, new cars...... I was really impressed.

@ Chris: I've got some ;-) more. I see what I can find. Looks like you like the Belarus? I drove one our farm, too. Really not too bad. Had sort of a powershift, too.
