Ripe Poppies in Tasmania
Ripe poppy crop, Perth, Tasmania, summer 1998/99.

The poppy harvester is working way off in the distance.

Looking up an irrigator run back into the crop, with the harvester off in the distance.

Re: Ripe Poppies in Tasmania
Yes it is blue, sometimes a pale blue, sometimes a dark blue/ blackish colour (like rapeseed / canola).

It is the seed you see on bread rolls & that is used in cooking (poppy seed cake, for example).

However, for us the seed was just a by product, a bonus if you like; we were after the opiates & alkaloids within the poppy (morphine, codeine, thebaine, etc).

Re: Ripe Poppies in Tasmania
Extra area for poppies is being sought this season here in Tas, by the 2 processing companies. However, the dry season & questionable returns look like meaning that the companies may not be able to source all of their required area.

Planting is due to start in June, so time will tell I guess.
