Google Earth / Satellite Images
Alright, the world has discovered Google Earth.
Some have expressed concern regarding the posting of satellite images, and this thread can be used to discuss this, instead of cluttering up all the other posts as well as the peer review section with rash comments on the subject.

Personally I think it's hard to come up with a Yes or No answer, as it depends on each picture. I've seen someone post a placemark to a location on Windows Live Local/Virtual Earth, Microsoft's version of Google Earth some time ago, that was very good and farm related. It showed the John Deere combine factory, and was very clear and detailed. Looked identical to a picture taken from a helicopter, and it wasn't from directly above, it more at an angle to the ground. So I think it's a good idea to completely ban them, but until we reach a mutual agreement on what to do...

Forgot to add, until then, please do not "Peer Review" any satellite images, it's getting old.

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
Personally, I think that Josh is correct when he says "it depends on the picture". If it's farming related and is the best way to illustrate a message then why not? I believe that it's within the terms of service of companies like Google to use their images in this way (in fact I think it's encouraged) as long as you don't remove their copyright notices. I don't think it's appropriate for FP members to indicate that they "own" the picture however.

This image is of a very large farm in the Australian outback that has been established in a large lake that was drained for the purpose. It's interesting to me because it's a verdant oasis in the middle of a desert basically. Here's the link: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=-32.636484,142.057343&spn=0.209319,0.362549&t=k&om=1

TC mentioned that perhaps a category for these images would be needed.

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
Totally agree Josh & Stu. I was initially of the opinion that these images couldnt be used but upon reading Google's Q & A it appears they are.

As long as it isnt abused, it may be a chance for members to show others some satellite images of their part of the world :-) Posted with permission definitely.

As I said, maybe a seperate category is appropriate?

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
The " zoom" on google is not very good. It would be nice to see down to only a few 100ft from the ground. Anyway a category would be ok.

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
It wouldnt give you as much detail as normal pics of course but it might give other members a look at the "lay of the land" in the posting member's area / region :-)

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
Google Earth here isnt too bad, you can zoom in reasonably well.

However there are some blurry areas here, not properly covered & some overlap areas that show up (look like pics taken over two seasons), where fences, hedgerows & roads dont quite meet up.

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
Luckily the people from Google changed all satalite images in September from Holland so we are clearly visable now.

There is however an area underneath Camebridge (UK) which can be seen from some 100ft showing the labour in summer. Combines, ploughing, discing, etc.. you name it and it can be seen with the drivers waving in the cabs!

Steven: You have to give TC more credit. :-( I think it's a mark of a good member when he is prepared to admit that he is wrong.

Steven, relax a bit, and read his post more closely. :-)

Would you rather he didn't mention it and it turns out the pictures posted are breaking copyright laws to create more headache's for Stu? He stated his opinion, then found evidence to back up what he said. As it turns out, the evidence contradicted what he said, yet he still had the guts to admit he was wrong. If you have such strong feelings towards him, ignore his posts when you encounter them, the same way I do with some of yours.

I don't know, but it seems one can't say anything negative, neutral, or helpful without people jumping on them. And I'm not just talking TasCowboy, do a quick search on FP looking for derogatory terms and count the results. This is unacceptable. Just relax people, if you want to fight with someone go piss in your neighbors flower pots, then you can deal with them face to face, someone from the same situation as you.

Re: Google Earth / Satellite Images
Someone once said to me that it takes a man to admit he was wrong & about the Google Earth thing, I have no problem admitting I WAS WRONG.

Maybe you can learn something from this Steven or maybe not?
