Cows Outside in Canada
Here are some pictures of our milk cows outside at the feed manger. These cows stay outside year-round, in summer on pasture and in winter in this bedding pack you see. 375 total in this picture. Picture taken at -25 degrees.

another angle of the straw pack, it consist of over 2.5 acres. Cows are fed during morning milking and the manure is scraped off during the afternoon milking

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Cows are fed round bales (dry and silage) with this bale processor. This machine also has a grain tank with an 800kg capacity to top dress the herd throughout the day. This machine allows us to only operate one tractor during the day in the harsh winter, as it also does all the bedding.

Here is a picture of a New Holland skid steer we use to push the feed up. It has a one-way blade that swings to either side of the machine. model LS 185-B

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Yeah, me too:-)
I was wondering
-is it all on concrete or on the naked ground?
-are you saying you exchange the whole bedding once a day?
-the cattle you have besides the Holstein-cows, are they Jersey or Braunvieh (Swiss Brown) or another breed? They look a little big for Jersey cows.
-what´s your average milk yield?
-how much influence does the temperature have on the milk yield?
-what kind of parlor have you got?
A lot of questions but I´m very curious about your way of dairy farming:-P

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
jdeere: it doesnt really ever rain in this season. If it snows we have to clear it out with the tractor and we bring the old feed to the dry cows so they can sort through it. Usually a bit of snow doesnt harm anything its only a bother when we get 25cm overnight.

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Einascher: The bedding pack is on packed heavy clay. When i said the manure is scraped during milking i meant just the alleyways where the cows stand to eat. These alleyways are 14 feet of concrete. And no the bedding pack is left all winter. We milk majority holstein, about 50 jerseys, 30 brown swiss and about 40 fleckvieh crosses. The cows average about 24 liters a day across all the breeds. We milk our cows with a 24 stall swing over parlor. I will post more pictures of it soon. We can milk the herd in 2 hours.

Don't you think that a real structure would pay for itself in the long term. Do you have any shade, or covered structure?

Where in Canada is this farm?

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Nothingrunslikeadeere: We have room for about 40 fresh cows in an insulated barn when it gets really cold out, other than that they are outside. Not sure how you think a structure would pay for itself

Marty: We are just south of Winnipeg, Manitoba

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Its nice to see such a type of farm, I didn't know it existed. You have a lot of straw, do you buy it, or do you forage it from own fields?

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Steven: We get our straw in the area. We make about 3500 round bales a year ourselves with two New Idea balers

Re: Cows Outside in Canada
Do you have a problem with mastitis, frozen teat ends, or SCC with this setup? How does your ration work? Do you see lower Butter Fat %'s with running everything through that chopper? No corn silage? How many acres you run and whats your equipment lineup?
