Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
These pictures were taken at the 2007 forage symposium in Manitoba. The tractor is a 2006 Fendt 930 with 28' of cutting width supplied by kuhn. Tractor will be run on GPS (auto-guide).

outside in the parking lot. The tires seem small, The tractor was previously used for row crop, but we are replacing them with 710R42 on the back and 600 in the front. The tarps on the mower were rolled up for transport on the semi trailer.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
jdeere: I think it sure will be! We were told the conditioner would be ok for alfalfa as long as you set the combs to a lighter position, i guess then it just throws it through instead of damaging it too much.

ACS: The inside pics are taken in the Macdon training and exhibition building in Winnipeg and the outside pic was at a restaurant just outside the city.

TC: They sure do get bigger. I was talking to one guy that ran these mowers on a 926, and he said he had them cutting at 25km/h at a demonstration. At that speed you could sure cut alot of hay down! Probably not recomended if you want your machine to last a few years :-\

Ik kan ook nederlands als het nodig is voor de Hollanders.. :-)

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
jdeere: This mower was not designed for lucerne/alfalfa, but most manufacturers still try to sell them and recommend lighter settings. Finding the balance between proper conditioning and losing leaves is very difficult. Most people who grow lucerne/alfalfa choose roller conditioners because they are more gentle in all conditions. Not many manufacterers make these mowers with roller conditioning, but Kuhn does. Seems odd that they would not want to promote them. The roller conditioners do need more HP.

We will NEVER use flail conditioning for our alfalfa. It is a very delicate crop and using grass equipment is not good.

FD,me too for alfa alfa only rubber rollers
Nyhof,if your fields are nice and smooth,it wont be a problem with such a speed.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
Same with the Lucerne (Alfalfa) guys here.

New Holland Haybine, Kuhn, JD Mo Co, Hesston, Case IH & Vicon mower conditioners (all with conditioning rollers) are used on lucerne hay crops here in Tas. Some of the lucerne guys here told me as well that they prefer to use fingerwheel rakes for raking their lucerne, as they are more gentle on the crop & keep more leaf on.

Here in Sweden we don't have much alfalfa, but we have clover. It seems that the clover is "stronger" than the alfalfa due to that nearly every mower sold here have flail conditioner. It is nearly impossible to find anyone who has one with roller conditioners here.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
We use a John Deere MoCo with the flail conditioner in alfalfa hay. If you rake it a few hours after it's cut or early in the morning when it is still moist there is not much leaf loss. For silage we use a swather without a conditioner as the MoCo dries it out to much.

We cut at about 28 km/h and they last at least 7000 to 8000 acres( we never completly worn one as we trade them every couple years)

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
Lennart, I guess the roller conditioners would do a great job on clovers too. I think the aggressive action of the flail conditioners would do a good job on grasses but IMO would be too rough, even on clovers (would knock alot of leaf off).

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
TC; When conditioners come to market all were rollers, but today nearly all are flail conditioners. Here the problem is reverse compared to in warmer places, we have problem to get the silage enough dry in a short period when it's always risky having silage laying in the field due to risk of rain!

But I agree that the roller will be better if you get much clover, but a good silage have a mix of app. 80% grass and 20% clover (as seed).

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
Yes Lennart, I agree. I guess we are lucky in this part of the world that weather rarely interupts hay or silage making, while in Europe & Scandinavia the weather is a constant threat.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
We arent to worried about leaf loss as we will be raking soon after and baling it into silage bales. I think you would lose most of your leaf after the plant dries out and lays in the field for a week waiting to make dry hay. We dont want to wait for the weather to turn so we wrap up the bales and we are quite impressed by the feed quality. This tractor and mower is the first of its kind in Manitoba but there are many farmers that seem to be happy with their flails on NH and JD mowers. Our fields mostly have a mixture of grasses and a bit of alfalfa so we should be alright.

aslomp: with our NH discbine we did cut at the same speed as you and we traded off our machine at 12000 acres.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
Very slick set-up, Kuhn has never been my favorite, but it sounds like you'll be very pleased with it. This is a used tractor? Lease return...? How many hours, and how many do you plan to put on it annually[what do you plan on using it for]? Will it be replacing the 8970?

Lol what's with the restaurant bit? Trucker didn't want to fully deliver it?

I'd like to see more pictures, especially with the new tires.

Re: Fendt 930 with Kuhn triple mowers
Josh: Kuhn was the only brand that had a reputable dealer and service for this type of mower in our area. The tractor was demo'd by the dealership, it was running a potato digger last fall and an airseeder in spring. We bought it with 400 hrs. Our 714 got 1500 in the last year, this one wont be used for feeding so it will probably get 1000- 1200hrs. The tractor will replace the 714's job of bale picking with the Inland stacker(last year 7000 bales), also cultivation, mowing, hauling manure etc. We still have the 8970 to run one of the balers, the 714 will run the second baler.

The mowers were too high on the trailer for restrictions and underpasses in the city to bring it all the way to the forage symposium show, so the trucker dropped it off in a restaurant parking lot just before the city limits. From there we drove it to the show and parked it in the building. Once we get it running in the field i will take some more pictures.
