Introducing 'Tags'
This is a new experimental feature at FP.

'Tags' are short text descriptors that can be added to images. Any full member can add tags to any image. Members can also delete them from their own images.

What's the point you ask? Well, the general idea is to allow a bit more flexibility in how photos are classified. Tags can be used as an alternative classification system to FP's rigid system of categories. Tags are user defined so a picture can be classified into user-defined groups that don't currently exist. Multiple tags can be added to images.

For example, a picture of a model tractor in the 1/32 section might be tagged "siku", "denmark", "limited edition".

Tags are currently added to a photo by clicking the button which is at the top right of each photo. Tags can be added separately or in a comma separated list. All tags are lower case.

Tags are displayed along side images. Clicking on them will take you to a listing of posts which have been tagged with this tag. There is also a link to a listing of tags at the top of each page.

This feature is still experimental and under development. I am interested to see if it gets used and to see what tags are formulated by members.

Try it out and let me know what you think and what bugs you find...

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Stu, another question. What is the reasson that there isn't any history posting view any more? On the first version of farmph there was an option to see al the added post's on a day or a week. I like that that i can easy see and find what's posted on one day or in a few day's. Can you put this option back on this site?

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Johan: At the top of each page there are two links - "24 hours" and "7 days" . These are two different ways of seeing the posting history. With the 24 hour one you can click the link at the very bottom to show all the thumbnails as well.

Also you might want to check out the RSS functionality as this also allows you to keep a running list of posts on your own computer.

Will any of these work for you?

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Stu, yes i know these links and i also use them. But on the first version from farmph was it much bigger to see the history post. Then it was set up for a few weeks or month's or a year. To see a complete posting history for a few weeks looks to me as a welcome option. And then also with the little beginnings of the posted messages that you can read a little bit of a message before you click on the tread like it was on the first serie of farmph.
What do you think of it?

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Johan: i think to a large extent what you describe can be done with RSS. But it probably would not be too difficult for me to enhance what we already have as well. I will think about it some more.

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
I miss the same. on fp 1 we could see a list of every post of the last 24 hour. and now we have only a list of every threat in x hours.

so we can't see which photo's are posted in the last 24 hours in a threat of 2 weeks old.

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Nald: The 24hr listing does show new photos even if they are in old threads.

TC: Thanks Tas.

Johan & Nald: Check out the new link "48 hours" at the top of the page. Is this the type of thing you want? Give me some more ideas.

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
That looks easier to follow (IMO) than the 24 hours one Stu :-) good stuff!

TC: I was so proud when I made that "heat map" 24 hour page. :-(

Oh well. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose... ;-)

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Not saying it isnt a good idea Stu ;-), I never really use that feature personally (I am sure others do).

The 24 hour one looks a little more user friendly IMO ;-)

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Very good Stu, all of these improvements are good, but I'm not sure as to what extent you want us to use these tags? I've noticed a few of your tags and I rather get your idea, just unsure of how much we should be doing. For instance, I noticed "TM125," etc, but if we were to do this with every model on farmphoto... our tags list would be as long as our total posts. Not that this is a big problem, I just want to know more what you had in mind.

Also, perhaps we could the option to either retain our post count etc individually, or to just have the option to plain not show it. Personally I think we should be able to select a board-wide on/off, as opposed to each person having a choice, same as avatars and signatures. Some people just want a clean cut, sleek board with as least distractions as possible.

And I have a feeling the whiny kids will be back out in full force whining about Craig's post count again now that it's more visible... which I notice they seem to have settled down lately, I don't know what I missed? :-D

Thanks Stu,
-Josh

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Josh: I'm not 100% sure how the tags should work. I've kind of thrown them out there and will watch to see if anything develops. As there are now well above 200k photos posted I am trying to think of ways of making all of them more accessible. Tagging should let people apply their own classifications to their photos in ways that the formal sections at FP can't. Maybe this will help. Probably one good way to use them would be where you post something under a certain topic but you know that it would also fit under other topics (ie., a tractor photo posted in a thread about a visit to a field day in the 'farm events' topic). You could then have the photo in the thread but also have it tagged by tractor type.

BTW. After you type the 1st 3 letters of a tag it will try and auto-complete based on existing tags.

Being able to turn off the user stats is a good idea. I will implement that.

I put the stats in because I think it's a good idea as far as building community goes for people to have an idea of who they are talking to. Number of posts is certainly a flawed indicator but it is a place to start at least. Unfortunately looking at my own number makes me realize that i need to post more! :-[ At least I've got most people beat on the 1st Post date! ;-)

:-) You sure have Stu.

I like the idea of the tags. I think it is a more personal / individual tool for classification of individual photos, which also helps others as well (who might be looking for a photo of something specific).

Keep up your good work with the site Stu :-)

Maybe some people chose to grow up & get over it Josh? I am sure that many will agree with me when I say that we have had some great new members contributing photos & comments on the site over the past 6-8 weeks. which has been great to see (lets hope it continues) :-D

Cheers,

TC.

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Here's a quick example. Someone interested in photos relating to poppies could look in the 'Crops/Field Crops' category but they would have to dig through all the non-poppy photos there. Even then they would not find posts that were poppy related but not in this category (such as poppy harvesting machinery photos).

OR they could click on a tag 'poppies' and find this

Of course you could also use the google search but this is dependent on the poster having entered appropriate search terms.

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
This function with 'Tags' is excellent!

I have got some time to explore the tag function and I think it can be very useful, se Stu's example above about poppies (TC- you must be glad for that!). But we all need to get used to use it, I shall try to remember "tagging" my photos in the future.

I also find the '1st post" info useful to see if it is an old or new member. Especially when you are either new or old in this forum it can be very useful to know!

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Lennart, I have disabled the "1st Post" info for the moment as I am having a database problem and am making sure this is not the culprit. Hopefully it will be back shortly....

Re: Introducing 'Tags'
Yes Stu I just noticed that.

Thanks for the example :-) I will have to go through all of my pics soon and do some tagging,

Cheers,

TC.
