another pic taken from the cab this morning of sheep grazing grass.....of all things! good thing to see after last years bad drought....the main green in the middle is oats sown in march for them to graze. (the sheep are in the hills)

Re: seeding 2007
yes every one does! many also sow barley for feed. its due to the lack of grass in our area also very good for them! everyone sows a paddock or two for the sheep its common practice especially in south australia.

Re: seeding 2007
Alot of farmers here sow oats ONLY as a fodder crop (for grazing), it doesnt even get to be locked up for heading. Some guys also make it into hay or silage.

Quite a few plant it as a catch crop between spring sown crops such as processing (vining) peas & poppies.

Dual purpose grazing wheats are also popular down here too.

Re: seeding 2007
Wheats & Oats bred specifically for grazing Bobman (palatability, tillering, etc).

Why is there no grass? Australia has been in the grip of a really bad drought, for quite some time. Some areas of Aus have now had some rains (including here in Tas) but the drought is far from over, I can tell you.

Re: seeding 2007
no grass for the sheep after the drought affected seed set and most was eaten away to nothing! we only had 175mm for the year last season with 3/4 of that before the end of july!and almost had that much this year to date!
