Mapping your location
This is a new feature that was suggested to me by TasCowboy. It's my first cut at it so no guarantees as to how well it works.:-[

In your profile there is now a map (like shown above). You can click on the the map (after zooming and panning to your desired location) to put a marker indicating where you are from.

Everyone's markers are shown at the link [Map] (at the top of each page).

The idea is for people to be able to see where other members are from and maybe see which members live close to you. You don't have to put your location on the map if you don't want. It's completely optional.

Feel free to tell me about problems you see and give whatever feedback you want to about this functionality. For instance, should it be open to members only, or guests as well?

Re: Mapping your location
well done Taz & Stu, I would suggest that some parts of the globe may get kinda conjested, say like Holland and Belgium. Nice to put a geographic perspective on the postings and see the agriculture from that region. nice touch farmerboydave

Re: Mapping your location
I have a sugestion to everyone who will place there little ballon, use the map and satalite option, or else you get the same result as "Annes" from holland, who lives in the middle of a field (according to his ballon of corse ;-))

Yes Niels you are probably right. But it's a feature people can use if they want to. To improve privacy maybe I should make it so only registered members can view the map?

Another thing i was wondering about. Should i make it so that all photos can be geocoded like this?

Yes Stu, i think you must make it so that only registered members can watch the map.

How do you mean all photos can be geocoded?

Can you explain?

Re: Mapping your location
Stu, i also like it that the avatar and flag is shown,

Johan, you must place your own ballon where you live, go to "my profile" and place the ballon on your house, read the text a placed a few messages before and you will get how it works.

great future, i hope much members wil use it:-)

i agree that only members can see this

edit: maybe it's an idea to make a little balloon by each member who has "mapped" it self that is linked to that big map

Stu, I believe what he means is that under the map page, you should be able to see just the name under the info bubble, and not the picture, since some of the pictures are bigger than the bubble. However, I think it is a good idea to have the avatar, as they are most memorable. If I don't remember the user name, I'll remember the avatar.

Great idea Craig, and thanks for implementing it Stu. I do like the idea of being able to geocode the images, however... perhaps it would be easier to have an option to simply Geocode the thread, instead of all the pictures? Otherwise that could be awfully complicated, and likely more difficult/sizable to implement.

I think the option to do both would be good, for instance, people like Jdeere, with one thread subject showcasing pictures from around the world. However, I'd like the ability to just code the thread as well, that way we wouldn't have to code each individual one. For example, you could just code a single thread at being at the fair grounds in Toronto for a farm show, you don't need to select every picture. Of course, having the ability to code each one could show case some things such as the lay-out of farms, etc. For example, during silage, I take some pictures in the field, and some pictures at home. I could pinpoint down to directly where the images were taken. Custom crews could show how some pictures were taken in one county, and others in another county on the tour. Same goes for some of the road trips.

Hopefully you can understand what I'm getting at, I know I ramble too much.

Tom, I have thought about it but when i think of the bandwidth involved my head starts to hurt! i don't think there is any technical reason i can't do it (I have successfully done some testing in the past) so it will almost certainly come.
Johan Straver wrote:

Johan, in your profile you should be able to alter the position of your location. Every time you click on the map you position will (or should) alter to the new place you clicked. You can also drag the little marker around. The location (latitude, longitude) in the text boxes below the map is what is important so you can also alter them manually if you want. To remove your marker i think you can just clear both of those boxes.

OK. I will make it so that only "Full Members" can view the complete map
Gerbert wrote:

OK. I will do this.
Josh A wrote:

Yes. I think I can fix this.
DAMS wrote:

When you upload a picture you would have the option to click on a map to show where it was taken. Then the locations of photos could be shown on a map. I suppose you could do things like show the locations of all pictures in a thread, all pictures of a certain member, all pictures of the past 24 hours, etc etc....
Josh A wrote:

Yes, Josh, I think it would make sense to be able to do this. Some sort of "Apply this location to all photos in the thread" function would not be too hard to do. It's a good idea to have this.

Hope I didn't miss anyone!
