Re: Field crops 2007
Intresting to see your crops. Am I right that you have winter now, and these crops will grow for nearly one year?

What are the oats supposed for?

Re: Field crops 2007
Lennart,
we are in autumn(fall) now heading into winter we sow our crops in may and havest late october till early december usually.
the oats will be harvested for sheep feed either as grain or sown in a paddock for them to graze next year.
will post some more to show the development in the future.

Re: Field crops 2007
Good thread Andy, nice to see your crops :-)

Build on it throughout the year, like a few others have done (JCB, Lennart, Christoph, etc) & it shall be interesting for all to follow the progress of your crops, as they grow.

Top stuff old China ;-)

Re: Field crops 2007
Very nice photos Andy.

What sort of sowing rates do you use on the peas & the barley?

It is interesting that you roll your peas when they have been up for a while; we roll ours here at sowing time.

I looked after a Kaspa crop 2 seasons ago & we got a yield of approx 5 tonnes / hectare (dryland in a high rainfall season, on very rich volcanic red soil)

Re: Field crops 2007
Tas,
not sure of the sowing rate in KG but its about 3/4 of a bag to the acre for peas and half a bag to the acre for barley. You might be able to work out the rate from that.
Our best ever pea yeilds were 5 years ago when the best one was 3.7 t ha

Re: Field crops 2007
Ok, we sow field peas here @ 180-200 kg / hectare & barley @ 100-120 kg / hectare.

Your rates are about 93 kg / hectare for peas & 62 kg / ha for barley, based on my estimates.

A fair bit of difference, no doubt influenced by rainfall & available growing season moisture ;-)

Re: Field crops 2007
yes rainfall has a lot to do with it just found the book here with it all in it....peas 100kg ha and barley 70kg ha so our guess work wasnt far out!

Re: Field crops 2007
Ok thanks. I was working on bags being approx 50 kg. Peas have a bushel weight of 27kg (1 bushel = 27 kg) & Barley is 23kg (1 bushel = 23 kg).
