Introducing photo geolocation
After I implemented the member mapping functionality that TasCowboy asked for it it was a natural progression to move on to mapping individual photos.

So, now when you log in and view one of your photos you should see a little link titled 'Geocode' to the top right of the image. Clicking this will lead you to a page very similar to the one you use to geocode your own location in your profile. You can pan and zoom on this map until you find the spot you took the photo (you may have to change the view from map to satellite image etc). Then simply click on the map and you should see a marker place where you clicked. You can drag this marker around if you want to.

At this point you have two choices. You can either apply this location to the single photo or you can apply it to all existing photos (owned by you) in the thread. When you choose one of these options you will be taken back to the thread. All photos that have been geocoded will now display a link "Map it!" at top right.

To view the location of photos you can currently do one of two things. You can click on the "Map it!" link or on the new link '[mp]' below a members name (ie., [h][p][f][w][m][mp] ). In both cases you will go a map with the member's geolocated photos on it. The "Map it!" link will highlight the relevant image.

Clicking on a marker on the map of photos will bring up a balloon with the photo in it. You can also navigate forwards and backwards through the members photos. Clicking on the photo in the balloon will take you to the message itself.

It is worth noting that if a thread of photos has had the exact same location assigned to all photos then the resultant markers will be overlaid on top of one another. In this case you will see some sub text with something like '(2 of 3 at this exact location)' meaning "you are looking at the second of three photos at this location". You can use the little forward and next links to switch between the photos. You can also click on the links at the right of the map to switch between photos.

OK. That's a lot of writing but it's hopefully fairly intuitive. No doubt there are bugs in my code but try it out and let me know what you think!

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Another good idea Stu. It gives the viewer the ultimate insight I suppose on just where that particular photo or photos were taken.

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Thanks TC. Here's a cool example that shows how mapping a photo can help put it into context. I took some photos while in Lubbock, TX a few years back of a farm machinery salvage yard. My photos were OK but don't really show the immensity of this scrapyard. When you zoom in on the aerial photo however you can see the individual machines! Check it out here

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Here's another one of mine I think is cool I took a photo of some greenhouses I was doing work at from a light plane. Looks like i wasted my money as I could have waited a few years and got a better picture from Google!

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
It's a nice option!
But I think the members shouldn't take every foto on the map
(sorry for my bad English)

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Worked fine for me Stu.

I tried it out on some of my pictures & it worked just fine. I always work in Firefox, so maybe it is an IE problem?

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
I just did some more. The Geocode button is under tags. Working fine here.

Maybe you could share what you did DAMS in case others have the same problem?

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Mathieu, I can't explain it properly but it was a dumb bug of mine. I made some changes so now it is fixed (fingers crossed ;-) )

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
This is a great option Stu! Well done! Especially with Google Earth, so you not only see a map but also a real life view!

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
That's a pretty neat feature Stu! Especially for the Europe people, since they can zoom in pretty close to their fields etc.

Too bad our area isn't that detailed in Google Earth. I mapped my "seeding wheat" pictures, but we can't zoom in far enough to even see the house. Let's hope they will work on that in the near future:-) http://www.farmphoto.com/fpv2/message.aspx?mid=408866

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Stu a nice option would be, that if you click on a photo in the mp menu, that you automatically open the threat. and if you click on the balloon of the member in the map menu that you open the posting history.

it's just a sugestion, but keep up the good work

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
@Nald: Currently if you click on a photo in a balloon on the map you will be take to that thread. When you are looking at the members map you are taken to the authors history if you click on their name in the balloon.

Maybe I am not understanding what you mean? :-[

Edit: Actually, you go to the members history if you click on the little [h] below their avatar - just like at left here.

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Check out this photo from DAMS. The overhead view shows that the photos were taken next to a bizarre looking star shaped field. Mathieu says it is an old fort. Cool. :-)

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
Stu, I mean if I click on [mp] under your avator, I see al those balloons where you take a picture, now I zoom in to the combine graveyard, and I see you made there tree pictures. and now I want to see the threat with those pictures and the story. Now I can't click on the foto and see the threat, but I must go to your history and search the threat. So I was wondering if I click on the photo in mp you can open the threat.

I hope you get what I mean, and maybe you have changed it already, I don't know because I'm not able to check it now(map feature doesn't work on my telephone, but that's normal ;-))

Re: Introducing photo geolocation
@Nald: OK, I understand. I can't remember whether this was how it was when you first asked but now you can click on the photo in the bubble and it will take you directly to the thread.

(I still can't believe you use your phone to surf FP - I must be getting too old ;-) )

If you want to see an example of somebody doing an excellent job of geotagging their photos check out Bas. He currently has over 1000 photos geotagged!
