Re: Fendt 818 spitten
What crop was gong to be planted in this field Michiel? Why use a machine like this in there instead of just a power harrow (like a roterra)?

Cheers,

TC ;-)

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
We were going to plant maize here, we used the spader because then we don't need to plough. We couldn';t plough because the machine was busy already for a customer.

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
Ok, thanks.

You guys seem very fond of over cultivating your soils & burning diesel, IMO. We wouldnt worry about ploughing a fallow like this, discs or tynes would do just as good a job but alot quicker & cheaper than ploughing & using powered implements.

Regards,

TC ;-)

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
Yes indeed, we harvest 60/70 tonnes of 1 hectare potatoes here.

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
Yes DJ Moes, I am aware of that.

However, here in Tasmania our climate is very similar to yours & while our soil types might differ, these reduced tillage methods work well here, in a wide range of crops.

Your margins will go up if you can reduce your costs & in these tight economic times any cost savings have got to be a bonus havent they? Remember, we farm without subsidies, so margins are tighter for us anyway; any savings we can make in inputs means a better bottom line at the end of the day :-)

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
Those yields & better (75 tonnes / ha) are possible on our better soils here too :-)

We dont have the money (capital) tied up in the tractors & machinery that you guys seem to either, so less costs in that respect too.

Tas: I will learn more of that type of farming this summer! I will go on a school traineeship in Australia for 11 weeks! :-D

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
It just interests me that the UK & other parts of Europe (EG Germany) seem to have embraced minimum tillage widely while you guys seem to have stuck to the plough & powered implements.

Ok Michiel. Which part of Australia are you intending to work in?

Re: Fendt 818 spitten
TC; If you have this type of special crops like potatoes, sugar beats, maize for silage etc. it is safer to use the plough and make a good tillage, and safety in getting a crop is very important if you pay as much for the land as they do in Holland, Belgium and other farm intensive areas.

With light soils which are easy to plough it is not much more expensive. They also often have smaller fields so they cant use the big equipment you use.

We are also more restricted to use herbicides and then the tillage can be the best way to control weeds, if you grow maize year after year ploughing is the only way to control the weed!
