New email notification service
This is something that Victor Guardia prompted me to do after he requested it last week (and others have in the past as well, I apologize for not getting around to it sooner).

In your Site Settings (in your profile) there is now a check box that allows you to receive email notifications whenever somebody replies to a thread you have started. Hopefully this will mean that you won't have to check your threads as often.

If you didn't start the thread but want to "subscribe" to it to receive emails when it changes you simply go to the thread and you will find a button at the bottom of the page that will let you "subscribe" to, or "unsubscribe" from, the thread.

It's pretty basic and of course the usual disclaimers about bugs apply. :-[ Try it out and let me know what problems you find or suggestions for improvements you have.

Note: Your email address must be correctly entered for this to work!

Thanks for the comments Johan, TC, and Marco.

One thing I should have said is that setting the checkbox in your profile is not retro-active - that is, it won't subscribe you to your old threads. To subscribe to these you will have to go back and subscribe to them manually. :-\

Re: New email notification service
great future again:-)
because checking old threads every once in a while sure is a pain.

edit: i think it might be nice if you made it an option to get a pop up in stead of, or together with an email..

@Gerbert: When you say "pop up" do you mean that when you are on FP something happens to notify you of a reply?

Re: New email notification service
that's what i mean:-)

i also visit some phpbb forums, and there you can set such an option for sertain things.

Re: New email notification service
Stu... does this apply to one we've started just after this change comes in to effect, or will they work for all the thread's we've started?

Also... For the subcriptions... perhaps as an alternative to E-mail, would it be possible to have one of these type of pages made up?
AgTalk-JoshA's Currently Active threads.

Or perhaps, what about a little section on the left column, right above the "Top 10 Photo Posters", identical to it?

For example...

The link would be in the different color depending on whether or not there was any new activity.

I'm sure you could up with something!
Thanks

Re: New email notification service
@Josh: Threads are subscribed to individually. All the checkbox does is default subscribe you to threads you start from now on. So it won't subscribe you to any old threads. You'd have to do this manually. :-(

How do you envision "Your Recently Active Threads" being determined? Is it any threads that you have started or participated in, or is it somehow manually set - ie., whenever you see a thread you like you subscribe to it even if you have not posted to it? Or is there another mechanism?

Re: New email notification service
Another very good idea and well realized. I think it's no problem at all to subscribe to older threads manually because there are not so many "active" older threads.
Gerbert's suggestion of a Pop up sounds great to me, too but if it is too complicated getting an e-mail will work fine.

Stu, my thoughts were that it would only work for the threads you've posted in, however I suppose that is not necessary. What about a separate page?

Full Member | My Subscriptions | My Posts | My Favorites | My History | My Profile | ____ | Logout

Under my subscriptions, you would have a chart, that showed....:

Thread Title | Forum Title | Author | New Posts | Last Post
Page: [1]

[ ] Unsubscribe

I really just don't like my e-mail inbox being flooded by all my subscription updates, and the 24 Hour and 48 Hour tabs are a bit too much for me, considering I only concern myself with a few small corners of FP. My updates don't need to show me all the posts in 1:32 Scale for the past 7 days. Drives me nuts more like it. I see the thread title "oh, that looks interesting.... oh.... it's a.... toy..... X"

Re: New email notification service
@Josh: I have finally made an attempt at your request. At the top of every page you should now see a link "My Threads" (when you are logged in). This will take you to a listing showing the latest posts of all threads you have recently participated in. See what you think....

Re: New email notification service
Stu! It's perfect!

I'm sure there could be some optional tweaking, such as how many replies, the time, etc, but it's really not necessary. The way it is is a much cleaner lay out, easier on the eyes. This is perfect, and shall get much use from me! :-)

Already an example to me of it's usefulness, is a reply from Jdeere on the baler fires 4 days after my post, and another from you about the movable threads. As I was in the states for the weekend, I never saw the reply. Until now. ;-)

Just one question, how long is "recent?" Looks like about 3 months?

I'm really liking all these site-wide changes, especially the new code for resizing images, making available the code to link off-site, much quicker with you providing it, even just the banner across the top. (farmphoto - this message is subject to change.). Just really really impressing. Between you, the members, and the site itself, it's a real joy to participate on this site.

Thanks again Stu,
-Josh

Re: New email notification service
@Josh: Thanks for the encouraging comments. Sometimes my tinkering makes it better, sometimes worse, but I am always open to criticism and ideas.

"Recent" is indeed 90 days (as in, any post that has been added in the past 90 days to any thread you have ever participated in). This is arbitrary and could be any number.

Edit: Right now only you can see your threads of interest. I could make it so that anybody could see your thread tracker but I didn't know if there was any point?
