Fruit poster
This is a draft of the new Hawaii fruit poster that should be out in July.

Re: Fruit poster
when you think about it it's a shame that our food consumption is influenced by large supermarkets that stock only the most basic of fruits (tasteless but shinny and clean as the housewife wants.). It's interesting to see the choice available from Hawaii let alone other parts of the world. Most of these I've never seen before. Must say the snake fruit looks quite a prickly crop to harvest, I'll stick to the strawberries in the greenhouse!

Re: Fruit poster
This is Dragon fruit . i took the picture a few years ago in Thailand.
if you don't like fruit that is too sweet you should try this , it's very mild but tasty.
looks like a kiwi from the inside , only it isn't green but white with black dots
so cheap in Thailand. i went to an Asian store in Antwerp and you pay easily 20$ for one :-\
cheers,

Roel. ;-)

Re: Fruit poster
Hi Ken, this pic is very interesting and I can only agree with Dave regarding the choice we have at the supermarket.
Unfortunately I can't manage to read the names of the fruit. Can you post the poster in parts with larger writing or send it to me by e-mail? I've never seen such an interesting collection of foreign fruits before. Thank you.

Re: Fruit poster
Hi Dave
Your right about lack of selection in most markets outside of SE Asia or South America. I tend to shop more at Farmers markets when I can find them. A lot of these fruits are not found in Hawaii markets, just small specialy stores and with farm stands. We have the same problem here.
Part of what my job is for university is to find ways to get local markets back from imports.

Re: Fruit poster
Hi Roel,
We grow a lot fo dragon fruit or pitaya here too. It is pretty expensive.
The pink and red ones are pretty but yellow ones taste much better I think. the brix is much higher and they can get very sweet.
I wonder if he dragon fruit you get in Antwerp is from Israel where they also grow a lot of these unusual fruits.

Hi MB trac 1800

Too bad there is not much choice in markerts.
We have 200 types of avocados here
200 types of mangos
50 types of bananas
25 types of mandarins / tangerines
I dont know how many types of oranges! There are so many choices and they all taste better than the average mass produced things shipped here form other places.

shows a bigger version of the poster.
I hope you can read the names. We will have it printed next month.

Re: Fruit poster
Hi Ken, the link is working fine. Thank you very much. Unbelieveable how many sorts of fruits you have over there. :-)
Most of the fruits we have here I don't like very much :-\ I rather like some of the exotic fruits like starfruit and cape gooseberries and things like that but it's difficult to get good exotic fruits here.

Re: Fruit poster
I once put on a website that Hawaii had more types of fruit than anyplace else in the world. A few weeks later 2 guys from a Univ. in Bangkok showed up and I had to prove it!

Re: Fruit poster
Hi MB trac 1800
It is too bad we cant send many of our fruit around. We cant even send to other parts of the US. Its based mostly in the strength of California Politics I feel.
If others get a taste of real avocado from here, they will never buy the garbage from Calif.! I hope onbe of these days you can try abiu and torta
and really good jackfruit or jaboticaba. It's a great experience!
