JOSHJA 443706 367 New Baler on 924 either
New Baler on 924
We decided to try some new things... I picked up the tractor and baler on Friday. Tractor is a Fendt 924TMS (710/70s) and the baler is a Hesston 4790 3x4 baler with 4925 bale accumulator.

Re: New Baler on 924
I love the baler, but have very little good to say about the tractor. Dealer is wanting to bring out one of the new 900 series as soon as they get one in, we'll see if that changes my opinion on Fendt.

Re: New Baler on 924
My only complaint about the baler is that it doesn't transport very well. :-(

Re: New Baler on 924
Was it the Nut behind the wheel that needed tightening that caused the roll over? :-P

Re: New Baler on 924
LOL stuart,

my thoughts are about the same with the fendt tractors. In my opinion you are better off spending a little more money and getting into a more popular brand like case, JD, MF, NH, etc.
how did the baler come up after this accident?fixable?:-\

LMAO :-D

Josh, I guess the dealer MAY NOT be so keen to have you demo more of his gear now ;-)

Re: New Baler on 924
fendt is a very popular brand here, and those are very good tractors, but that 924 doesn't have tms I think.

Hey, go easy on him fellas, he just wanted to see what the bottom of the baler looked like without getting his clothes dirty. Did the dealer knock a bit off the price Josh?

Re: New Baler on 924
a JD costs more than a Fendt Andy???:-\ Ow My God. And indeed Fendt is very popular in europe.
And what is wrong with the Fendt? I think a vario drives very good. A lot nicer than a powerquad in my opinion.
And it looks like that is a sucky baler, if it can't even go on a straight road:-\ Years ago you saw some hesston around here because a lot of european makes didn't have big balers. But nowadays... Nothing anymore.

Re: New Baler on 924

Re: New Baler on 924

Re: New Baler on 924

Josh I know JD doesn´t have big balers right now, but for your opinion comparing JD and Hesston which brand is the best in hay & forage equipment?
That last photo is a proof that sh..t happens
Take care.

Re: New Baler on 924
LOL stuart.... not necessarily no. This tractor was a last-minute choice for this baler, was supposed to be a new 926 with duals (710/70R42s) but something went wrong with it on Friday morning.

The 924 had all of it's weights removed, so the baler out-weighed the tractor. Normally this would not have been a problem however there was a bale and a half left in the chamber eliminating most tongue weight, and when I went to slow down, it started to fish tail, first the baler then the tractor as well. The tractor is equipped with air brakes, but the baler not, so when the tractor tried to slow down, the load tried to get out in front, and it started to lift up on the back end of the tractor. Essentially, the "tail wagged the dog." When the tractor finally stopped, the back end whipped right around, broke off the tractor, and rolled. Still connected by the break-a-way chain, the tractor snapped backwards and was hanging close to two feet in the air.

This is actually a Hesston baler. The up until 2003 the CaseIH balers (and all other hay equipment) were actually a Hesston, not a repainted CIH. Now MF, New Idea, AGCO, and Hesston hay equipment are just that, Hesston.

Victor, John Deere did make the "JD 100" 3x3 medium square baler, which was a complete flop. Rumor has it they're coming out with a new one, but that rumor has been going around for years. As far as Hesston vs John Deere, my opinion is somewhat as the saying goes, Nobody knows hay like Hesston! They are unparalleled with any other brand of big square baler on the market, and their large rounds and haying equipment is definitely on par with, or exceeding other brands.

However, that being said, we have been extremely happy with the John Deere 567 balers, now replaced this year by the new 568s. If not for the square baler, we would likely be getting a new JD568. I have little good to say about the JD mowing equipment, and would lean to first New Holland, then Hesston mowing systems.

There are some nice ideas on the Fendt, probably the most sophisticated brand of tractor out there, but not exactly a joy to operate nor work on. The front suspension on the Fendt is better than the TLS, but I still like the IVT (AutoPowr) better than the Vario. Perhaps more time spent in it will cause me to like it more, however I find it's an extremely cramped cab, even for a small guy like me, and controls are poorly placed. In my opinion, the steering is far too responsive, especially for transport, which was one of the main reasons I wasn't going very fast while pulling the baler. Also in my opinion, the transmission wasn't responsive enough, it tells what speed you are currently traveling at, but not what the control is set for, therefor I find I over compensate. The instrument cluster was also difficult to read at a quick glance.

Henry, sure, once I figure it out for myself, then I can give an accurrate explanation. Until then, the best that I can do is that I was inexperienced with pulling this baler, and when I started to slow down because I was approaching a farm yard, the tractor didn't have enough weight behind it, so the baler just pushed the tractor along, fishtailing, then finally whipped right around, broke off the tractor, and rolled into the ditch. I posted the rest of the accident pictures and an explanation on another forum, and it's so far received over 25,000 hits and over 65 people having some heated "discussions" as to the cause.

Accidents happen. I drove last week into a pole that was sticking out of the ground for 15 cm's. Didn't see it and now we have 2 new back tyres:-\ "luckely" the old ones were due to change this or beginning next year.

Re: New Baler on 924
Josh, thank you very much for that explanation. I´m a green freak, but you´re right Hesston is better than JD. Why did you choose a fendt tractor instead of a john deere?
Take care.
