Re: John deere 7020
keep on driving all the way around, pulling up and let down the harrow on the way, the tractor wont pull the machine from zero to working speed in 6th:-)

Re: John deere 7020
Robin - Very nice pictures of this impressive oldtimer still in work!

You asked about experince with pea stubble and working the straw down. I have the same experience with ordinary discs. But today I saw this JD 6920s with a Väderstad Carrier working pea stubble, and as you can see the result is far better. But you must know that yesterday it rained 20 mm.

Re: John deere 7020
pracht van een trekker. 2 jaar geleden reed er op de werktuigendagen ook zo'n model. hoeveel pk heeft deze trekker? en heeft hij ook een powershift bak?

having the wings up would help and maybey a bit slower.

Re: John deere 7020
Very nice pics Robin :-)

Wings up on a folding set of discs is particularly good in hard conditions, especially if the discs are a heavy duty set. I have seen guys here doing this with International 770 folding discs, to very good effect, in a range of conditions & situations.

Pea straw is tricky, the best thing I have found is to bale it & get it off the field then direct drill into it (preferably with a disc type seeder). Keep tynes away, as they are just like a rake & will drag it all over the place. Discs cut through, without dragging too much,

Regards,

TC ;-)

Re: John deere 7020
Robin very nice oldtimer!! I think you should try with a no-till drill or planter and keep the straw as a mulch.

Re: John deere 7020
@TC - Maybe baling is a way to solve the problem, but if you get rain in the swats it is impossible to get them dry again. And I don't no if the harvesters can shut of and fold away the straw choppers? I still think that a disc like Väderstad Carrier with high weight and aggresive discs that sits tight is the best alternative.

Re: John deere 7020
Lennart, to the best of my knowledge straw choppers or spreaders can be turned off on all combines.

Pea straw is usually not too hard to dry, can be turned in the swath with a hay rake or even spread then re windrowed with a tedder or rake. Here alot of guys rake & bale the green (processing) pea trash, it makes a good stock fodder or garden mulch. Pea viners dont really leave windrows / swaths behind them, so the straw is raked up then baled.

Of course it may be harder to deal with in wetter climates, I am only speaking from my experiences over here, where it is usually dry during harvest time.

I havent seen one of these Vaderstad Carrier machines in action but from what I have read they are good machines.

Regards,

TC ;-)

Re: John deere 7020
TC; I meant Pea viners, I know that combine straw choppers always, but with different amount of work, can be turned off.

We have tried to bale combined straw from peas, but with our conditions i would not recommend it.

Re: John deere 7020
Ok, must be too much moisture at that particular time Lennart that makes it difficult.

Here, in most seasons we dont have that problem with our pea harvest.

Re: John deere 7020
Thank you all for your help;-)
I do think our disc harrow isnt heavy enough, and working with its wings up would help maybe, although the disc's arent very sharp. The pea straw is very tough in my erea. and the finers do not spread it:-\ They 'windrow the straw'. and at the ground the straw is a little bit wet too. If i am driving in the same direction as the finers do, the disc harrow will windrow it too. working on 90 degrees worked out better, but isnt perfect in my opinion. the customer i was working for was very satisfied. Before this jd disc harrow my boss used a very heavy Rabe (german) disc harrow, that one did the job better, but that was a very expensive machine, and we rather use the jd combi:-D
