Re: volvo 814
Not useful.

Needs also duals on the front, otherwise the compaction will
be caused by the front wheels, so the ground is already
compacted before the rear wheels go over it.

Re: volvo 814
I think the back wheels our a bit over the top it look a
crap tractor and it would not have the top of the range of
engine so whats the point at least put them on a good
looking tractor like a MF 699 with some proper perkins
power.

Re: volvo 814
T.E.D, are you kidding, surley BM 814 is an old construction
and in it's later years of production it was really not up
to date, for example the 4wd could only bee used at low gear
range. But one good thing about it surley is the motor and
for good reasons, Perkins make tractor motors and nobody
would try them in something that is not agricultural, Volvo
makes motors primarly for buses and trucks there the demands
are higher, low fuelconsumption, low vibrations, low
emmissions, high durability, easy mantanance, high torque,
low noise - such things, there are good reasons you don't
find a Perkins engine in a bus, it just isn't good enough. I
have tryed driving and repairing Perkins and Volvo engines
and if any of those should be called crap it is Perkins.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH TED WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY I AN
DISSAPOINTED I THAUGHT U WOULD KNOW THAT PERKINS ARE THE
BEST IVE GOT 7 WORKING MASSEYS MYSELF AND THEY ARE VERY GOOD
ME AND A MATE BOUGHT A 510 10LITRE V8 PERKINS OUT OF A TANK
NOT LONG AGO AND PUT IT IN A MF 698 IT WAS VEY EASY , MUCH
BETTER THAN BYING ANY OTHER CRAP WE NOW USE IT OUT IN THE
FEILDS PULLING A 8 FURROW PLOW AND DOING OTHER HEAVEY JOBS
LIKE THAT NO CRAP LIKE THIS WOULD PULL SUCH AN OBJECT.
I HOPE THATS CLEARED UP ANY OF UR MISTAKES

Re: volvo 814
Hey Jim and t.e.d.

Tell me something about Perkins then seeing as how you guys
seem to be experts on the subject. How come Massey switched
to Valmet(Sisu) engines for their higher horse power
tractors? Can you two shed some light on this subject?

If I remember correctly they did this back in the late 80s
when they still owned Perkins! To this day they still use
Sisu,not Perkins!

Re: volvo 814
T.E.D, it seams you agree with me, Perkins makes more noise,
more smoke and doesen't have the even ride of a Volvo that
runs like an electric motor - the difference seams to be
that what I think of as advanteges you dislikes - well,
thats up to you. Point is you classified Volvo as crap
compared to Perkins, after driving both sorts several
hundreds of hours I say thats totally unjustified and
personally i absolutly prefer Volvo for many reasons. That
don't mean Perkins is a crap engine, they certainly do their
job and do it well. To bad Volvo isn't used in agricultural
tractors any more, probably they are to expensive. And who
knows how long Perkins will survive as an independent engine
maker, rumors have been heard.

Re: volvo 814
Hey Anders,

Perkins is already taken over by Caterpillar some years ago
!! They havent survived as an independent, in fact, when
were they independent? Massey Ferguson bought them in 1959
or 1960. since then, they have been no longer financially
independent, the last years, they are slowly losing their
technical independence.

Re: volvo 814
oh look theres only 26 volvo piks that tells us summut like
theyre unpopular, undrepowered and crap id leave them
alone ive bin working the land for 45 years only using
perkins b.2394's etc dont u tell me that volvo (whats
volvo) are better we were going to put a volvo
bus engine in our 298 untill someone told us that they were
unreliable and NOT MENT FOR TRACTORS so we stuck with
perkins the most widely used engine for plant, agricultural
and development perposes at least we diddnt stoop so low as
to put them in a car!!!!!!!!! what a joke theyre too
powerfull volvo use theyre 1978 2.65 litre car engine in a
tractor !!!!!! u wudnt see perkins do that!

Re: volvo 814
too expensive what are u on they stopped bacause in the
1980's the firm tummak - owners of volvo went bust and in
1992 they tried to restart but were unable to keep up with
demands of cummins , ford, dodge and PERKINS u are just
making evrythuing up and how could u have spent several
hundred hours on volvos what werent even ther what did u do
pull a road cleaner?

Re: volvo 814
how can u say that perkins doesnt have the ride of a volvo i
promiss u that u have never driven a perkins in ur life
because perkins only make engines not the tractor themselvs
so the ride probably wont be very good if u put a perkins
engine in a volvo for instance

Re: volvo 814
Volvo tractors merged with Bolinder-Munktells to form BM
Volvo. (The picture is a BM Volvo). BM Volvo merged with
Valmet. They are now sold as Valtra. The engines are now
known as Sisu. So, you could say Volvo engines, (their
descendents at least), are still used in tractors.

Re: volvo 814
Renze - OK, thanks for information, seams I wasn't quite
updated. But in princip I was more right than I thougt.
Jim - Please tell us more about a Volvo tractor with a 1978
car engine. As far as I know around those years Volvo used
Perkins engines for the smallest models, a 4,2 l Volvo BM
engine for the middle range and the Volvo made T(D) 60
engine for the largest models. Volvo bust in 80 and restart
92? Nothing heared of that over here. And to spend a lot of
hours with Volvo engines, well thats easy, I had a 2654
(thats the successor of 814) an autumn and today I have a
wheel loader and an excavator with Volvo engine. I have also
done some truckdriving. I have also owned and driven a lot
of tractors and combines with perkins engines. Are there any
other of you who are telling which engine is better who
really have had a good chanse to compare the motors?
Kevanos - I don't think you got it quite right, Volvo surley
merged with Bolinder-Munktell and in the 50's and 60's they
made really ok tractors but later they didn't hang on with
development and decided on that was presented as a joint
venture with Valmet but in fact lead to that Volvo left
tractormaking and Valmet, currently Valtra carried on alone.
Volvo BM didn't disapear, they are today known as VCE, Volvo
construction equipment and is nr 3 maker of construction
equipment after Cat and Komatsu. The Sisu engines used in
Valtra is of a totally different breed than the Volvo
engines, the successors of the engine in BM 814 is today
used in wheel loaders and such machinery. After they sold
out the cars to Ford Volvo is today to the biggest part a
truck maker, after GM they are today nr 2.
