JOSHJA 469213 26 Stu! The ability to hide a thread? either
Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
Stu, this may seem like a bit of an odd request, but could we have the ability to hide our threads?

Reason being... especially for people on dial-up, some of these long threads, by the time the author gets all of his pictures put up, there's already lots of responses put into the mix. Or, sometimes you can have 100 people view the thread of just 3 pictures, and by the time you've gotten them all uploaded, they're hardly viewed at all anymore. I'd like to be able to put up all my pictures, and then say "Ok, make thread public."

Not sure if you know what I mean? If this is possible?
Thanks :-[
-Josh

By the way, I've been meaning to ask for quite a while now, I notice your flag location has changed, did you really move?

You can also mark in your first post: do not respond untill i have posted all my pictures

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
it's not the same Steven. I think Josh A has a good idea. now there are always posts where new pictures are posted, and when you watched them one time, you don't look again to see the rest of the pictures which are posted later

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
@Josh: I know what you mean. At first I thought "this will be easy", then I played around a little and now I am not so sure! I will have to think about it a little more. There must be a solution that is a little easier than the ones I have dreamed up so far.

Regarding your second question, yes I now live in Australia. After living in the States for over a decade we decided that it was time for us to move home. Professionally it was not a great move, but on the whole life is much better for us here.

Edit: BTW, farmphoto members have an open invitation to visit. My map icon marks my house so I am not hard to find! :-)

@Tom: i know it's not a solution to every case but don't forget you can use the "subscribe" button to get email updates if a thread looks like it will be added to.

Maybe it's also interesting to make a new subject called 'Movies' where people can add movies by hotlinking them (like we do now with YouTube and Google Video).

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
Stu, I hope all went well with the move, and I think I just may have to take you up on your invitation, Australia is at the top of my list of places to travel to in the next couple years. I'm thinking of coming over on a work VISA, work on one of the farm labor programs, and then spend several more months there on holidays.

Would it be possible to allow a thread to be transferred from one topic to another, either by the author or simply a timer? Then we would simply need to have a separate Topic set aside that's just called "Threads In Progress" that doesn't show up anywhere under recent or anything.

I don't know Stu, you're the mastermind here not me, I have faith in you. ;-)

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
@Geoff: I'll put some beers in the fridge for you ;-)

@Michaël: Sure, this sounds like a good idea. I will do it...

@Josh: I have looked at this problem 6 ways from Sunday and can't come up with a good solution. The problem is with my original design not considering this useful functionality so I wrote it all wrong to do this. I am thinking it will have to wait until FPv3. BUT I hadn't considered your latest idea (movable threads) - that might be the solution.... I will think on that one now.

Australia is a great place. It's a long way from anywhere but well worth a visit for those who can spare the time. Especially from an agriculture point of view as there are lots of innovative farmers here.

I don't know a lot about work programs but I know they exist. It would make sense to do it that way....

yes aussie is a good place but there is one catch to coming here.....you may need to bring your own water as most of the country is very light on this precious resource!:-DLOL

As long as there is enough water, malt & hops, us locals or any visitors wont go thirsty ;-)

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
@Josh: OK, I think I have something usable for now. I was able to implement your idea about threads in a forum not showing up on the main page and then being able to move the thread after you have it the way you want it. The 'testing area" section already doesn't show up on the main page so rather than make a new section I have used it. So start your thread in this area. When you are finished with it there is a little pulldown and button at the bottom of the page. Use this to move it to the section you want it in. See how it goes. No promises, but I think it is working...

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
Stu, in theory this sounds exactly what I need. I'll have to experiment with this as time allows. It's just that for instance, for hay / silage this year I have 26 pictures of cutting alone! :-[
Then another how many of raking, 23 of baling, and an uncounted number of loading / hauling / unloading...:-[

For me to create public threads... there'd be conversations happening before I was done posting half of them!

Also... I'm just wondering...
(Yes, more nagging about outrageous new features. :-D)
And I know I asked this before, but I think it'll be easier now.. Is it possible... to somehow tie forum topics and tag topics together?

For example, for my silage thread this year, It's being broken down into 4 threads, and technically it falls in to 9-10 categories.

John Deere 7000+
Fendt 700+
New Holland
Balers
Mowers & Swathers
Implements
Farm Vehicles
Haulers
Crops - Field Crops
Sunscapes

I wish I could just toss them in one thread and tag them into the different categories. :-[

And another, minor detail, what about group geocoding and/or tagging? Not sure if you're familiar with Photobucket.com? What they have is an option to check or uncheck your individual thumbnail photos, and after you have your selected group, you can move them as one into a new folder or what have you. Tagging is not so bad as it recognizes any matches, but with Geocoding you have to present every last picture, or the entire thread as a whole. Sometimes I'll have a thread taking place in different places, but a series of pictures at the same place. Perhaps people don't view the locations, but I'd like to be able to show how far apart our fields are, etc. Not a big deal, but just something I thought I'd let you ponder.

Thanks Stu, I'll go have a whorl at this movable threads.

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
Alright Stu, I've got my completed thread over in the test forum.
As this is what I'm assuming to be the first membered attempted thread move, and being as it iis 25 pictures long after all... would you mind ensuring there's a back-up copy of it before I attempt to move it? :-[

It's not that I don't trust your code, it's just that it wouldn't be the first time something hasn't gone according to plan. Even just a major load in the server could cause this to be a major "bummer." :-D

After all....:

:-D Don't worry. I don't take any offense at your apprehensiveness! I am the first to admit that I am far from the world's best coder!

I think it's pretty safe but i will go check...

Re: Stu! The ability to hide a thread?
You're good to go. The process of "moving" the thread actually only involves updating one column in the database to change the forum ID associated with each of the messages in the thread. This means that it should not be possible to actually lose or delete anything. The worst that could happen is that the thread is associated with the wrong forum.

Just to be sure I moved your thread to 'General' and then back to 'Testing'. There was no problem.

Cool thread BTW....

You make my head hurt Josh. Just when I think I am catching up you move the finish line even further away! :-P

I don't know. I know what you mean but I don't know exactly how to do it yet. I'll put it on the list...

Gerbert has also asked for this. There has to be a way. I'll have to check out photobucket and see what they do....
