Re: Dairy youngstock
These are some of the 300 or so heifers reared on this farm as replacements for four local dairies. The farm used to support a 180 cow spring calving herd but the poor state of the U.K. dairy industry the last few years convinced the owner to sell up and rent out the land.

Re: Dairy youngstock
Ok, thanks.

You mention the poor state of the dairy industry in the UK, thats interesting as it is one of the industries here in Aus & over in NZ that is currently booming (seems to be the milk powder market in Asia is the big market for dairymen here).

TC ;-)

TC
The U.K dairy industry is experiencing a sharp upturn in prices too the last few months but it has gone through a period of sustained low prices(well below 20p/litre for 10 years). In 1996 there were 28,000 producers in England & Wales. Now there are 12,000.Production this year is set to be a billion litres below quota and by November there are worries milk supply will be unable to service the fresh milk market and the U.K already import a lot of dairy products.

Re: Dairy youngstock
Ok, thanks for that.

Very interesting that a country the size of the UK could possibly be facing this predicament,

TC ;-)
