Baling with John Deere 7630 & Hesston 4790
Well here's the second last installment of the hay and alfalfa silage pictures from this year. Mostly just pictures of the 7630 on the 4790 baler, sometimes with glances at the semis, the 7710 on the rake, and the 716 either on the discbine or loading bales.

This is our first baler, our first time making our own hay/silage. It's a Hesston 4790 3x4x8 square baler, with 3-bale accumulator.

Makes the 8 foot bales look small.

Re: Baling with John Deere 7630 & Hesston 4790
The first couple rows was spent with the salesman getting the baler set up. That meant we made several 5 foot bales, which, when pushed off the accumulator just stood on end. :-D

Why do you prefer the big square bales to rolls Josh?

Re: Baling with John Deere 7630 & Hesston 4790
Craig, in a word: Capacity.

As I've said before, this is our first year making our own feed. Previously we've purchased it all already baled in the big rolls. This year we were kinda forced into making our own, and we decided to go to the square vs the rounds. There's only 3-4 of the big square balers in my area, vs hundreds of rounds. This particular baler of ours is the only like it for several hundred miles. Main reason being... price. It's 3 times as much for this unit as the biggest JD round baler. Plus, many people don't have the equipment big enough to handle them.

As far as baling speed... there's less congestion, easier on the crop than a round (less leaf loss in my opinion), and there's no stopping to tie, etc. Not to mention that with the accumulator, I can carry bales to the end of the field. I'm left with (mostly) just two rows of bales at either end of the field, which makes the truck driver and the loader operator *very* happy indeed. Not to mention the land owner.

We have a lack of space available to store the bales. The 3x4x8' bales are actually smaller in volume than a 6.5x5 foot round bale, however because I'm packing them MUCH tighter I'm getting more tonnage per bale, in a smaller package. Added to the fact that we can stack them 6-7 bales high.

For our round baled silage we could get 38-39 bales of silage per bag, and we were hauling 29 bales per truck load. With the squares we can put 111 bales per bag, stacking 3 high in a tube, and 45-54 bales per truck.
