Poppy Harvesting
New prototype poppy harvester front on a Massey Ferguson 8780 (I think) header, Longford, Tasmania, summer 2003/04.

The front was based on the same type of fronts that were used on the "chopper harvesters" (some of these can be seen in my other poppy harvester pictures).

This crop is pretty thick & was a bit lodged (was grown on raised beds). Unfortunately this was the only photo I got of this machine, as I had to get to another paddock to shift a harvester ;-)

Re: Poppy Harvesting
Thank you ikizlerkocabiyik ;-)

Was a bit too thick Bapman, the guy drilling it stuffed up (put too much seed on), so the crop was fairly spindly (single heads per plant instead of the usual 4-5) ;-)

Re: Poppy Harvesting
TC, how different is the harvester machine from a regular grain combine harvester? What exactly is the poppy product used for?

Re: Poppy Harvesting
Yes Bapman it can be a problem but this guy was always having the problem :-\

Josh, it is the same as a "normal" combine, just set up to keep the seed, capsule & some of the straw (not sure of exactly how the machine is set up, sorry).

The poppy crop is used in the manufacture of pain relief medication. Morphine, codeine, oriparvine & thebaine all come from poppies (codeine is used in products such as Panadol)

TC ;-)

Re: Poppy Harvesting
interesting pic

There are some years similar Headers appeared to this, to use in the rice, but it was closed on top, I think he had a rotor that sucked only the grain, the plant was whole, in foot. But it didn't develop because he left many grains in the ground.

Re: Poppy Harvesting
Maybe it was a stripper header front Luciano?

Re: Poppy Harvesting
yes TC, it was a stripper header front,
it was similar the one of the link, other problem that had, the rice in some parts of the field falls ill, the foot lied down and this type front header didn't work well.

thanks

Re: Poppy Harvesting
Yes Luciano I think the crop needs to be standing well for the stripper fronts to work effectively.
