Cows after milking.Note how cluster drops down so it can pass under the entry/exit bridge and keep clean.

Re: Westfalia-Surge Rotary milking parlour
This farm was milking 600 cows three times a day.Another 80 cows were also being milked from a neighbouring farm after they were flooded during the summer.

The centre. This was a seriously high-tec milking setup with all cows having activity meters to detect heats.Cow performance is constantly monitored from the office beside the parlour and feeding/breeding decisions etc. being made with help from computer generated reports.Milk was sold to a leading supermarket on a premium liquid contract and judging by the huge 25,000 litre outdoor milk silo there was a lot being produced each day.

Very interesting post gjl.

What surprised me years ago, when I saw the first rotary milking parlor is how easy it's to turn it. The one that I saw back then was floating on water and a small electric motor was driving it.

Interesting posts GJL.

The rotary dairy has become quite popular here with dairy farmers as well.

Intresting pics!

We have some farms with milking carousells here in Sweden, both older types with inside milking (I have some pics I will post later) and this modern type. The biggest are of this size, a deLaval 60 cow miling parlour at Wapno, today they milk 1100-1200 cows, the plan for 1900!

a problem when the parlor is floating on water is that the water smells bad after a fiew weeks. Milk and other parts of (shit) can flouid into the water. Newer installations are rolling like a train.

Re: Westfalia-Surge Rotary milking parlour
Thanks for comments guys.
Most rotaries are powered with horizontal drive wheels and electric motors like the De-Laval one pictured but the Westfalia in this thread used hydraulic motors connected to a remote power pack outside the parlour.
If the drive fails for whatever reason during milking i believe you can simply disconnect the drive wheels and turn the platform by hand to get the cows off.It might be a little bit harder to push than one that floats on water though!
