Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
We made a visit to a milk farm in eastern Sweden a month ago and I took some pictures. This farm got 410 milking cows in a stable built app. year 2000.

Milking is done in this carousel made by de Laval. In this HBR type the milker stands inside the carousel and cows stand with their heads in the rotaional direction.

The milking parlour has 24 places and here you can see the entry, the way out and the milker.

This is the free stalls barn with feeding table in the middle. Feeding with a Keenan mixer towed by a Case Magnum 7110 (!!).

Thanks Geoff, I had to take a break for dinner, more pictures are coming!

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
This is the calf stable - an open structure with only roof and hutches for the calves - small one calf hutches like the one in the foreground for new born calves, and bigger hutches for groups of calves for the older ones.

The single calf hutches from another angle.

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
The older calves are kept in groups in this bigger hutches. This open and nice stable have decreased calf death to very low - less than 4%.

After they have been to old for this stable the heifers are mowed to their old barn and the bulls are sold to another farmer.

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
They are planning for expanding the heard to 6-700 cows, and here they have started the ground work for a new cattle barn, which also shall include heifers.

The slurry tanker, a Star (Swedish brand) 15 or 18 cu.mtrs., i guess, towed by a JD 7810 including Greenstar GPS.

Last picture showing the old barn - a masterpiece of building art but not so modern today. Houses the heifers until the new cattle barn are ready.

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
Thanks Redmetal, this big milk farms become more and more common. In our own area is one 400-cow stable being built, and we have many with over 200, and in the region the biggest have 1400 cows.

To Mustaf: This type of posts don't say anything, and I have given it a peer-review!

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
Great pictures. Thanks for posting.I like the internal milking rotaries like this one as you can see all the cows during the milking cycle. The only downsides are you need a much bigger building to put them in and once you are in the centre you don't really want to climb over the milking cows to send more in or check the milk tank etc.

Very nice photos Lennart!

Do the Swedish milk farmers have to respect any milk production quotas?

Will the new barn be partially open on the sides, with a curtain? (like on the above photo)

Interesting to see the concrete walls in the feed alley, I guess this way you don’t have to push the feed in from time to time. But do they have to clean it manually?

Thank you,

Tony

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
Thanks everybody!

@Tony; I'm no expert in milking cows, and then I didn't get everything at the visit, but I shall try to answer your question as good as I can;

We have milk quotas like the rest of the European Union. As trade of quotas is limited to the individual countrys, and Sweden have higer quota than production it has never been any problem if you exceed the quota, other countries that exceed their national quote has to pay duties to EU. You also must have enough quota if you want to build a new stable with investment subsidy from the goverment/EU.

I have no idea of how the new barn will look like, in our area some farmers has build cold barn with curtains, but the majority still build warm barns with concrete walls.

I don't know about the feeding troughs if the have to clean them, maybe this system gives less losses to and then not need so much cleaning?

Re: Swedish milk farm - 410 cows
I'l hope for the diary farmers in Sweden that the milkprices wil improve, in September they had the lowest milkprice in all of Europe, And only New Zealand had a lower milkprice in the world..

Arla foods Sweden payd 29,93 cents, in New Zealand the milkprice was at that time something around 25 cents. Last week, Bell Leerdammer payd us 51 cents..

(price per 100 kg standard milk with 4.2% fat, 3.4% (crude) protein, 500,000 kg per year, total bacterial count 24,999 and somatic cell count 249,999.)

And Ofcourse verry nice foto's Lennart ;-)
