Sod field being harvested
Photographer: My Grandmother
Place: Salem, Oregon / USA
Crop Type: Perennial Ryegrass Sod
Date: July 1990
Description:
An uncle of mine owns a sod farm, and this is a picture of
one of his fields that is starting to be harvested. The sod
is cut into rolls approximately eighteen inches across and
several feet long. These are used by landscapers in the
area to create "instant lawns" for homeowners.

Description:
This is a picture of the cutting unit on the sod harvester.
I'm not 100% sure how it works, but I believe it has an
electronic eye somewhere that runs the steering of the
tractor the harvester is attached to.

After a sod field is planted, the field is layed over with a
plastic mesh. The grass grows up through this, and the mesh
becomes a part of the grass root base. The cutter seen in
this picture is cutting beneath this mesh layer, and this is
what helps hold it all together.

This is a picture of the back of the sod harvester. One
person operates the tractor and another gets the really fun
job of stacking the sod on a pallet by hand.
