Re: FWD stuck
Yes, buy a LandRover!

So you can break more axles, ECU's, gearboxes, timing
belts..
The ECU is about 50-60cm over the ground (Wery good LR
tecnicians! The best position for fording passages! :-\)

IMHO
LR vs. F-350? NO HISTORY! (I live in Europe..;-) )
No horsepower, no AT.

My example:
LR Defender 90 vs. Mercedes G

SAME WORK: snow removal in winter, trailer 5 ton. the rest
of the year.
"on the paper" Defender is cheaper by far but..
The frame is not so good, also the transmission.

LR ALWAYS in workshop, 1000-2000£ repair costs in a year.
Naturally oil ewerywhere!
Mercedes G: NEVER stops, 0-200£ repair costs.
(Hmm.. now LR looks not so cheaper)

LR had NO diff locks in the axles => always stuck!
Confort ZERO (you drive scotched at the door, that's good at
some tricky passages but..)

And finally?
Defender => GO! No more LR!
Mercedes => Still working, and we have bought another
Mercedes G ::D

4x4xfar(LR ad): Ahahahah!

Re: FWD stuck
lison u are talkin out of your arse u obviously are either
lying or u were very unlucky and bought the one in a million
bad landrover.

whoever i have spoken too has a landrover, they are better,
the best off road vehicle in the world, higher payload,
higher towing load, higher capacity, a skimmed V8 has more
power and agility of any ford which frankly rots after about
2 years and a ford deasel just doesnt start unless u have 5
batteries.
buy the best 4X4Xfar buy a landie

Re: FWD stuck
FIRST:
Hey man: i speak out of WHAT?!?

SECOND:
I wrote MY experience.
It wasn't the one in a million LR, tell me if you can buy a
LR WITH 3 diff locks! You can't! Only with aftermarket
products.
In ALL TD5 models the ECU is mounted under the seat (a
nightmare, water problems), so the military models don'have
the new TD5 engine but the "old" 300tdi. Tell me why?

I have a lot of friends with LR 4x4's ALL say the same
things: Axles too weak (with an aftermarket lock you will go
SURELY in troubles with axles), Some problems with ECU's and
other stupid things. The old models (with the 200tdi) have
BIG problems with timing belts.

Towing load: With the same horsepower, torque and
transmission ratio the LR's with manual transmission DIES
vs. competition with automatic transmission.
Experience:
LR90 300tdi vs. MB G290 AT
The LR with 4LOW range wasn't able to start in a slope
(20-25%) with a 6 ton trailer!!!
The Mercedes started wiht... 4HIGH! :-D

(I'm not a magician, the torque converter multiply the
torque by a factor 1.8-2.5)
I don't say: LR=>shit, no... absolutely.
BUT in special Offroad situations it isn't so good (without
some mods).

IMHO the V8 is one of the best 4x4 motors, good horsepover,
good torque.
LR's have good agility, wery good angles.
With a RangeRover AT, diff locks, strong diff&axles (the
HCPU ones) and more attention in some details a
Defender90-110 could be a wery good Offroader (the best?).

BUT at the moment you can't buy a LR with this options...:-(

Last year we have bought another 4x4 but.. it wasn't a LR!
The budget wasn't so high for a Mercedes so we buy a
LandCruiser HZJ71.
4.2litre diesel NA, diff locks in axles.

Look the US IFAV:
"With an IFAV in two-wheel drive, our instructor easily got
through areas we frequently get our Dodge Rams stuck in,"

Re: FWD stuck
Africa in the '60 and in the first '70 was FULL of
Landrovers; and now?

FULL of Landcruisers HZJ! The substitutes for the old
LandRover "series" models (88"-109"..Wery tough!)

H1 Hummer. Enough said. By far THE BEST offroad vehicle
ever. As far as payload, Ford Super Duties (all of them).
You guys argue too much over the littlest things.

Re: FWD stuck
right, i will try to answer all of your queries in a
civilized manner and clear up any mistakes you have made:
i am sorry but i cannot tell you much about the TD5 as i do
not own one myself and do not want to get all of my
information out of a book when i havent seen any problems
for myself, i cannot tell you about thee ECU, because that
sort of thing is too modern for me but i can tell you the
basics which are:THAT THE td5 IS THE DIFINITIVE EVOLUTION
OFF ROAD 4x4 VEHICLE, UNRIVALED ABILITY, DOESNT REALLY HAVE
ANY COMPETITORS, VERY BASIC, HARDWARING, TRACTOR LIKE TRIM
AND SOPHISTICATED LEVELS. ONLY AVAILABLE WITRH SUPERB TD5
FIVE CYLINDAR TURBO DIESEL DIRECT INJECTON, INTERCOOLED
SERIOUS OFF ROAD VEHICLE, PREHISTORIC WINDOW WIPERS AND
CRUDE HEATERS, SEATS ARE BASIC, UNRIVALED OFF ROAD ABILITY
CANNOT BE COMPETED AGAINST, OFFROADER OF THE YEAR
1995,6,7,8,9,00,01,02,AND O3 WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
THE MOST COMMONLY USED 4X4 ON PLANET EARTH, CANT BE THAT BAD
THEN CAN IT?

ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS HAVE LR'S? WHY IS THAT IF U ALL HATE
THEM SOO MUCH WHY DO YOU EVEN BUY THEM?
AXELES TOO WEAK? NEVER HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE, OVER THE PAST
40 YEARS IVE HAD ABOUT 20 DIFFERNET LANDROVERS (NONE FROM
NEW) AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE AXLES, ALL HAVE
CARRIED LARGE WEIGHTS, LARGER WEIGHTS THAN ANY OF THE
COMPETITORS WOULD EVEN GO NEAR OF, TONIGHT I CAME HOME IN MY
1983 LANDRVER 300TDI I HAD TO PICK UP THREE RAMS , MY SON
WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND WE HAD 4 SHEEP DOGS IN THE
FRONT, THIS IS DONE ON A REGULAR BASIS AND IVE NEVER
EXPERIENCED PRBLEMS, EVERY THURSDAY I TAKE AROUND 300 SHEEP
TO AUCTION IN MY IFOR WILLIAMS, THE LANDROVER HAS ALWAYS
DONE IT 3.5 TONNES PULLS FINE, THE ENGINE COULD BE LARGER,
GRANTED BUT ITS SUFFICIENT AND WE DONT THE FUEL TO BE TOO
EXPENSIVE.

ABOUT THE DIFF LOCKS THREE DIFF LOCKS????????????
WAT U GOT THREE AXLES???
2 AXLES, 4 WHEELES, IF U LIFT ANY 4X4 VEHICLE ALL 4 WHEELES
WILL SPIN BUT U COULD GRAB AND TWO ON OPPOSITE SIDES WITH
YOUR BARE HANDS AND STOP THEM , SO THE DIFFERENTIAL LOCKS
THEM TOGETHER (AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW) SO YOU DONT GET STUCK
WHAT DO YOU NEED 3 DIFFS FOR? HOW WHOULD THAT HELP ?????

ABOUT THE TIMING BELTS ON THE 200 THIS IS CORRECT BUT IT
ANNER NO BIG PROBLEM WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE GO OUT OF
TIME????
YOU RETIME THEM YOU DONT BUY A NEW VEHICLE, NOT A BIG JOB,
LIKE THE FORD, THE HEAD CRACKS OR THE GASKET BLOWS THATS A
BIG PROBLEM.

AND WHATS THIS MERK U ARE ON ABOUT PLEASE SHOW ME ONE IS IT
A G-WAGON??????
IS IT A UNIMOG????
GIVE ME EVIDENCE, WHAT ENGINE HAS IT GOT???
IS IT STABLE ON THE ROAD, WHATS THE FUEL CONSOMPTION
LIKE?????
U HAV TO WEIGH EVERYTHING TOGETHER NOT HAVE TOO MUCH OF ONE
THING LIKE IF IT HAS A BIG ENGINE, INEFFICIENT
IF ITS UNSTABLE, UNSAFE
IF ITS USELESS OFFROAD U CANT GET ENYWHERE
AND BESIDES THE THING THAT MATTERS THE MOST HOW CAN THIS
THING BE SO GOOD WHEN I HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF ONE, WE
BRITS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE BEST, WHY ISNT THE LOCAL
MARKET FULL OF THESE MERKS? WHERE DID THEY GO WRONG?????
U SHUD BE ABLE TO TELL ME BETTER THAN I CAN TELL YOU U SEEM
TO BE PRETTY GENED UP ON THESE MACHINES????
I WILL ANSWER THE REST TOMMOROW IM BORED AND NEED SOME
SLEEP, BESIDES I HAV TO BE UP EARLY TOMMROW TO FEED THE
SHEEP IN THE ONLEY VEHICLE I KNOW CAN DO THE JOB.

Re: FWD stuck
"right, i will try to answer all of your queries in a
civilized manner.."

OK, the fisrt step is right. Tanks! :-)
I appreciate this!

"UNRIVALED ABILITY"
Sure? Against 98% of the competitors YES! I found the ohter
2% ;-)

"VERY BASIC, HARDWARING, TRACTOR LIKE TRIM"
Is a "plus" point vs. competitors also for me.

"THE MOST COMMONLY USED 4X4 ON PLANET EARTH"
Hmm.. in the 70's YES. But now... See the news: Afican
rebels&Armies; in Afghanistan; Asia.
I think TOYOTA is the most commonly used 4x4.

"ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS HAVE LR'S? WHY IS THAT IF U ALL HATE
THEM SOO MUCH WHY DO YOU EVEN BUY THEM?"
Not ALL but SOME.. the budget in this particular period was
not so high to buy a Mercedes (I'not an Arabian prince..),
so we buy a LR.
We (I & my Father) tinked: "With good mechanic care and
competent service we can combat against some weak points..
the LR is a good choice"

"AXELES TOO WEAK?" Sorry, my English is not so good.. i mean
Half-Axles.
Look that! http://www.d-90.com/faq/Drive/drivemain.html
http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/axleinfo.html
Should i continue? It's an old story..

"1983 LANDRVER 300TDI" ?? You mean surely 1993..
The 300tdi is a wery good motor, the best LR diesel motor by
far.

"..IFOR WILLIAMS.." Are they good trailers? In my opinion
YES.. for you?
Normally we build OUR trailers (we have a good mechanic
department) with BPW axles (http://www.bpw.de/en/index.html)
and other Heavy duty stuff (air brakes, BIG drums, big
suspension..).

"ABOUT THE DIFF LOCKS THREE DIFF LOCKS????????????
WAT U GOT THREE AXLES???"

Please, pay some attention..
You drive a LR 110 (or 90) transmission-side it's the same
thing.

What you make when you go seriously Off-Road? FIRST YOU lock
the transfer case diff. Or not?
With the central diff. "open" you go as far as a Isuzu AMIGO
and others "boulevard 4x4", when you lock this diff the
situation change. Or not? ;-)

HERE the first diff.
Central diff Lock + Front Axle + Rear Axle?
3 (THREE) diff locks!

Vehichles with 3 diff locks but only 2 axles:
Mercedes Unimog ("latest" series)
Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer (used and abused by British Army)
Mercedes G (series W463)
Some IVECO, MAN, MERCEDES.. trucks.
.
..
IF YOU NEED A REAL 4X4 buy it with LOCKERS!!!!

"ABOUT THE TIMING BELTS ON THE 200 THIS IS CORRECT BUT IT
ANNER NO BIG PROBLEM WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE GO OUT OF
TIME????
YOU RETIME THEM YOU DONT BUY A NEW VEHICLE, NOT A BIG
JOB,..."

It depends.. i can loss some work (contracts), surely i loss
hours.
Some bad words turn arond in the workshop (when i say bad
words is never good.. ;-) ).

"A G-WAGON??????
IS IT A UNIMOG????
GIVE ME EVIDENCE, WHAT ENGINE HAS IT GOT??? "
A G-Wagen isn't a 'Mog (we have three mogs, two little 421
and a big U1700)
We have also two G's, una with 2.3 litre petrol (ridicolous
displacement, but is fitted with ultra-low reduction ratio
on axles :-) ) end the new 2.9 Turbodiesel.
Both aren't gas-guzzlers.
Fuel consumption? 13-over22 l/100Km for the diesel,
15-over26 petrol, it depends.
(With the word "work" i mean trailering a 6ton trailer or
removing 60cm snow all the day ;-) ).

"U HAV TO WEIGH EVERYTHING TOGETHER NOT HAVE TOO MUCH OF ONE
THING LIKE IF IT HAS A BIG ENGINE, INEFFICIENT
IF ITS UNSTABLE, UNSAFE
IF ITS USELESS OFFROAD U CANT GET ENYWHERE
AND BESIDES THE THING THAT MATTERS THE MOST HOW CAN THIS
THING BE SO GOOD WHEN I HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF ONE"

Re: FWD stuck
Who called the Isuzu a boulevard 4x4??!!! The trooper is
just about the best 4x4 around (barring some electronic
timing trouble on newer models) Beats your Land Rover in
practicality and cmfort any day. Don't believe me?- Its the
most popular 4x4 in Ireland- you hardly ever see a land
rover here. You British think you're the greatest
manufacturing nation in the world. The japs will kick your
ass any day

Re: FWD stuck
Hey guys, what is a good price to buy a G-wagen, preferrably
a 300GD (with the OM617 engine, my brother had a W123
limousine built 1983 that has done over 835.000 km!)
from some sort of army dump ??

I want a bullet proof machine that has an OM617 engine, you
can turbocharge them to 190 hp, i think all mods needed are
just bigger precombustion chambers..:-)

Re: FWD stuck
u darn europeans and your land rovers american muscle like a
dodge ram 2500 or that ford will get the job done with outa
sweat and kick the land rovers ass. a 360ci hemi engine
against one of your little euro cars haha u lose. and mud in
the states is a lot different than in europe :-P

Re: FWD stuck
Pure power is not everthing in muddy conditions. Look at the
tiny tires of that truck. It would never stand a chance vs
an 80hp Unimog offroad.

Re: FWD stuck
With those tires it wouldn't even have a chance against the
late 1940's 25 hp Unimog !!!!

Re: FWD stuck
Hey i would even take the challenge to pass that mud spot,
where the pickup got stuck.. With my Volvo 440 !!
Yeah sure americans are superior to Euro cars... That pickup
is twice, if not three times as heavy, on almost the same
tire width. My Volvo weighs just 1033 kg and has its weight
equally spread over teh front and rear axle. The truck,
without load, has its weight only on the front axle which is
a bad weight distribution over the driven axle.

My "euro car" will pass just as good as a lame big 2wd truck
with narrow tires and a bad weight distribution.

Re: FWD stuck
Renze:
Good choice! :-)
But don't go over 150Hp..;-)

Automatic transmission IMHO is better on G's, check the rear
wheelarches and the rear section (under the rear door)

Price: about 6.000 Euro for a good example

Re: FWD stuck
Renze just goes to show that you know fuck all about that
pickup theres 4 whells on the back its a dually

Re: FWD stuck
So what?
Four times the size of a stamp touching the ground?:-D
Also a lot of tread on those tires.
Face it, that truck is not a proper offroad vehicle.
