MF 290 prototype
This tractor was found at the coverenty factor uk, when P V
Dobsons bought it with several other prototype tractors.
This 290 is very different from the production 290, the
engine does not act as the chassis, it has channel iron
beams that run from the bell housing then forms the front.
The engine is back to front, the flw-wheel is is now at the
front of the tractor, the engine drives through a shaft that
is connect to a rubber dount that bolts to the pully on the
engine, the shaft then goes to the bell housing, which now
has a plate on it with a bearing for the shaft goes to.
When it come to us there was no water pump, and could not
get a pump to fit, so we had to fit a new timing case. The
tractor then got a re-spray. It was then showed at
flookburgh steam geathering, only just though.

This is the shaft that goes from the engine to the bell
housing. The rubber dounut can be seen.
Re: MF 290 prototype
Do you have more photos of the tractor?

Re: MF 290 prototype
What's the benefit in turning the engine around and where is
the clutch located, considering the back of the engine is
now the front? [as I understand]
Re: MF 290 prototype
I could never see the benifit of turning the engine around,
and we couldn't find out why from massey either, and yes the
back of the engine is now the front meaning the flywheel is
at the front of the tractor, where the bell housing would
bolt on now just has a piece of tin covering the flywheel.
The clutch is still in the usual place only the bell housing
also has a flywheel in it.
The only sense we could make of this tractor is that
massey where experimenting with a chassis but that is only
an assumption.

a pic of the back end. When it came 2 use there was no brake
fulid resivour, no arms only parts of the stabilizers and
the levelerling levers where seised up.

In this picture the chassis can clearly be seen with the
rubber engine mounts. You also can see where the bonnet has
been modified.

MF 290 prototype
I have now found some information about the prototype. The
tractor was a mobile testing unit for the 200 series
tractor back end. The engine was turned around simple just
to keep the noise away from the back half of the tractor.
The tractor was known as blue bottle around massey plant,
due to the blue coloured tin work. The tractor is now for
sale and in need of a loving home, contact P. V Dobsons, Ivy
house, Lenvens.
