Nice to see those Fortschritt tractors.

I havent seen much of them. It seems this East German brand
couldn't hold up in the free market economy.

Was it because of the poor quality, ergonomics, or was it a
financial problem that made them disappear??

Hello Renze,

i am from Germany and i think it was a bit of all the three
points, but mostly financial problems. The former DDR
"Fortschritt" Brand was splitted in four companys:

1. Fortschritt: Made self propelled windrowers manly for the
eastern Countrys (Russia, Poland, Czech...) and big balers.
The tractor line was dropped in the early 90s. Than Mengele
bought the Fortschritt-Brand and dropped the Windrowers,
they only produced the big balers in mengele colours. with
the financial problems of Mengele CaseIH bought out a part
of Mengele wich included the big balers and the Mengele self
propelled foragers (Mammut 7000 Series). After the CNH deal
the big balers ar now sold under the Laverda brand. And the
Mengele foragers are dropped.

2. MDW: Made Combines (E 527 and so on) and developed the
ARCUS Rotary Combine with big rear wheels and small front
tyres and 40km/h Road speed. After some years CaseIH bought
out MDW. The CaseIH CF Series (only for Europe) are based on
the Conventional MDW Combines. There were some ARCUS Rotarys
painted in CIH red, but after a short time the ARCUS Rotary
was dropped (i think because CIH had already a rotary - the

3. LTS: They made the "Systra" system tractor and the
"Maral" self propelled forage harvester (with only 150 hp) -
mainly for the eastern countrys. They developed a new big
forager and the new LTS trac (based on the old MB-trac) the
forager was bought out by CaseIH and became the Mammut 8790.
It was a big pice of scrap. I have heard that if you bought
one 8790 you got a second to get parts from. CaseIH dropped
the Mammut 8790 after one year or so. The rest of the LTS
brand was bought by Doppstadt, they dropped the "Maral"
forager and now only built the "Systra" (known as Trac 80)
and the Trac 120? - 200)

Not many people seem to be interested in Fortschritt
history. I find it more interesting than to know which Case
model is based on what NH, and so on.
