Macadamia nut flowers
Looks like it's going to be a good year for mac nuts in
Hawaii. Too bad the price is so low!
Re: Macadamia nut flowers
Ken, I assume the price you refer to is to the farmer. In
Texas prices to consumers is not cheap. We farm so I can
relate to your meaning. Nice to photos of things I know
nothing about. Bill
Re: Macadamia nut flowers
Hi Bill,
Your right, the difference in price on mac nuts depends on a
number of factors. In husk prices range from 35 cents to 75
cents a pound. All are hand picked here as the terrain
is so rocky none of the machines work. They have tried since
the 30s to come up with some machine. One of he reasons mac
nuts came to hawaii was becasue of Cyrus McCormick saying
Hawaii need to have more diversification. He wanted to sell
machines (IH) but they never worked.
When I checked a few years ago it was cheaper for me to buy
processed roasted nuts from costa rica than to hire labor to
pick my nuts. In order to get the higher price the nuts have
to picked ( by hand from the ground) every few weeks. If
they are not picked frequently, the spoilage rate is high
from the shot hole borer and other pests. If we can even get
labor here, its getting to be close to $15 and hour. Seldom
can you get by the bag labor as we could 10 - 15 years ago.
The resort hotels hire the field hands for landscaping at
Probably more than you wanted to know but since you farm in
Texas you know the problems, especially with legal labor.
Take care
