IH 5188 Rendering
When IH was bought out by Tenneco in November 1984, IH was
working on the "New Farmall" series (the next 50 series). I
have never been able to find pictures of the test model 5188
(code name TX 189 I think). Since the cab and transmission
on the Magnum as well as the MFD axel were all taken from
the "New Farmall" test models and mated to a Case IH frame I
superimposed a 50 series hood and axel (2wd) on a Magnum.
The resulting picture is my rendering of what the New
Farmall would have looked like.
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
Wasn't the cab shown somewhat modified by Case?
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
The magnum was given Case body refinements largely regarding
the hood, however the cab was designed by IH, gives a good overview in the magnum
section. Thats why the magnum was such a solid tractor, IH
design :-D
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
I was working on the design of this tractor when Case and IH
merged. I may have some of the original renderings we
produced at that time and possibly mockup photos. If I can
find them - I'll post them.
My design firm has designed and styled all of the Magnums as
well as the IH 50 series, the new New Holland TG, TS, etc
with the "cats eye" styling, and a soon to be introduced new
CaseIH Magnum.
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
Hey MDI, i like the old designs better !! :-D

I have read in a Case history book, that the rear end was
IH, after the takeover mated to the 8.3 Cummins. Case
improved the cab, which was one of the most ergonomic ones
in its era. (The Case that were replaced by the Magnum were
antique, in my opinion...:-\ )
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
The cab was an IH design and didn't change much after the
merger. Case didn't have a cab design group, and what IH was
doing was a vast improvement over anything either company
had in production at the time. Youre right that the
transmission and final drive were IH mated to the
Case/Cummins engine.

Wait till you see the new Magnum - its impressive !
Re: IH 5188 Rendering
Hey MDI, if you had some original renderings or photos of
the tx 189 5188 prototypes or mock-ups that would be awesome
to see. I have never been able to find anything on it, just
text in IH books and on, but no pictures.
I was hoping somebody would see this pic and respond.
Looking forward to see what you've got.

P.S. I think the 50 series was a much better machine than
the Case 90 series, but I guess that is the politics of
